MAN WHO INFLICTED 'APPALLING' DOMESTIC ABUSE GETS NINE MONTHS IN JAIL
A man has been sentenced to nine months in prison after a six-month period of abusive behavior left a woman distressed, overwhelmed by fear, anxiety, and emotional trauma.Jake Gallichan appeared before the Royal Court yesterday to face sentencing for his involvement in domestic abuse incidents.
The 31-year-old was also convicted of damaging the complainant’s vehicle by forcibly removing the internal handle from the passenger side door.
Prosecutor Crown Advocate Carla Carvalho explained that the victim recounted a pattern of controlling and coercive conduct by Gallichan, which included threats to harm her living environment.
During court proceedings, a threatening text message was read out, in which Gallichan stated: “I’ve got £20 I’m sure that will be enough petrol to pour over the house and set on fire,” followed by: “Let’s see if the police can get here before the fire starts.” Approximately three months later, Gallichan threatened to disseminate private photographs of the victim on social media, the court heard.
Additionally, it was revealed he arrived at a family member’s home, shouting loudly outside, and then proceeded to the victim’s car, forcefully slamming the door so hard that the internal handle broke off.
The victim was visibly upset, crying and trembling during the incident, according to Advocate Carvalho.
Gallichan also issued a threat to harm the victim physically if her dinner was not ready promptly.
The victim described feeling intense anger and danger during the confrontation, noting that Gallichan’s eyes appeared murderous, his face flushed, and his hands tense.
Over the following weeks, he made further threats to destroy the victim’s electronic devices, including her television, projector, and microwave, warning her that more damage would follow if she did not comply.
In a personal statement read in court, the woman described feeling “consumed by fear, anxiety and emotional trauma” due to Gallichan’s actions.
She shared that she often experienced sleepless nights, her mind racing with worry and dread, and said she felt like she was constantly fighting to survive.
Defence counsel Ian Jones urged the court to avoid imprisonment, stating that Gallichan had “sorted his life out” since the offending period.
He emphasized that his client was employed, had not engaged in antisocial behavior or minor offences, and had made positive steps to rehabilitate himself, asking for a non-custodial sentence.
The presiding Bailiff, Robert MacRae, described Gallichan’s behavior as “appalling” and remarked that his actions justified a custodial sentence, stating, “the custody threshold is not only met but exceeded to the extent that we feel we have no option but to opt for a sentence of immediate imprisonment.” The court also imposed a five-year domestic abuse order and ordered that Gallichan be subject to notification requirements for the same period.
