JEALOUS OFFENDER SENTENCED TO 16 YEARS FOR ATTEMPTED MURDER IN SCARBOROUGH
A 24-year-old man named Jack Sutton was convicted of attempting to murder his former partner in a brutal attack that took place in Scarborough on December 10 last year.Sutton, who lived on Mount View Avenue, had a relationship with the woman that began in April 2020 and was often marred by jealousy.
Their romantic relationship ended about a week prior to the attack, with her moving out to stay with a friend.
Despite assuring her he would stop contacting her, Sutton continued to do so obsessively.
On the night of the incident, Sutton lured his ex-partner into a dark alley on Falsgrave Road after they had met for a meal.
During the confrontation, he kept her identification card away and threatened to destroy it when she tried to take it back.
He then drew a knife from his pocket, pressed her against a wall, and began stabbing her numerous times.
She fell onto the ground, with the knife stuck in her ribs, as Sutton continued his assault by slashing her face, and then punching and kicking her.
Several witnesses, including a neighbor and the victim’s friend, shouted warnings, but Sutton did not stop.
When police officers arrived, Sutton had fled and was hiding in a nearby garden.
The attack lasted around eight minutes, resulting in critical injuries to the woman, who was hospitalized at York hospital with partial lung collapse and a punctured liver.
She later received treatment at Hull Royal Infirmary and was discharged.
Sutton was charged with attempted murder and carrying an offensive weapon, both of which he admitted guilt to.
DNA tests confirmed the blood on his clothes and knife matched the victim’s DNA.
Analysis of his mobile phone revealed he had searched for the prison sentence for murder prior to the attack and had traveled to the crime scene.
The woman spoke about how the attack changed her life, leading her to learn to write left-handed due to muscle damage, and causing her to become more withdrawn and to experience nightmares.
During a court appearance via video from HMP Hull, Sutton, who had no previous convictions but had received two cautions—including one for strangulation in 2019—pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 16 years in prison along with a four-year extended license.
The judge described him as a jealous man who planned the attack to kill, suggesting a darker side and issues with addiction.
Sutton will be eligible for parole after serving two-thirds of his sentence, and will be subject to supervision thereafter.
Police officials commended their response team for their quick action and proper care during the incident.
