MAN IN COURT ACCUSED OF ABUSING AND KILLING PARTNER IN BOLTON
Jack Shepherd, known as the speedboat killer, has been accused of attacking his current partner and exhibiting controlling and violent behaviour. Now 38 years old, Shepherd was previously imprisoned for six years following the death of Charlotte Brown, who was ejected from his boat when it capsized on the River Thames during their first date in December 2015.
He also received an additional four-year sentence for assaulting a barman with a vodka bottle.
After his release, he faced charges of two counts of assault causing actual bodily harm, as well as allegations of intentional suffocation, criminal damage, and controlling and coercive behaviour towards a new partner, identified as Ms X.
Shepherd's violent history includes a series of serious offences.
In May 2016, he pleaded guilty to strangulation, actual bodily harm, criminal damage, assault by beating, and theft, resulting from an incident at his partner’s Bolton home.
During this attack, he bit, strangled, and "dominated" his partner, who later died a few days after taking an overdose of drugs.
The assault involved pushing her head into the bed, twisting her arm, and holding her in a chokehold.
Her teenage son, who tried to intervene, was also placed in a chokehold by Shepherd.
The police were called multiple times due to Shepherd’s violent reactions, which included further assaults such as biting her cheek and threatening her with a hammer.
Shepherd was sentenced to 50 months in prison and received a restraining order on the woman's son.
Shepherd's criminal record also includes a notorious boating incident in December 2015, when he was involved in the death of Charlotte Brown.
The incident occurred during their first date when Shepherd's boat capsized on the River Thames, leading to her ejection and subsequent drowning.
Shepherd was convicted in absentia of manslaughter by gross negligence in July 2018 after fleeing the UK and being extradited from Georgia.
He had previously been sentenced to six years in prison for this incident and an additional four years for assaulting a barman with a vodka bottle.
Since his release on licence in January 2024, Shepherd has maintained a relationship with Ms X, which has been described as violent and controlling.
In August 2025, he was arrested following reports of violence against her and is currently in custody.
His case has been referred to the Parole Board, which has scheduled a public hearing to review his ongoing detention and risk assessment.
Shepherd’s ongoing legal issues and violent behaviour continue to attract significant public and media attention, with authorities monitoring his case closely.
