YORK MAN PLEADS GUILTY TO STREET VIOLENCE AND DOMESTIC ASSAULT
A drinker named Jack Rice, aged 24, was involved in a violent incident on June 27, where he physically assaulted his partner and a man waiting at a bus stop on Haxby Road.Residents reported hearing the woman screaming and yelling 'Call the police he's just tried to strangle me' around 11 pm.
The court heard that Rice hit his partner to the ground multiple times, including grabbing her by the throat when she sought refuge at a primary school gate, and swinging her bag around.
During this disturbance, Rice also attacked a stranger, hitting him several times, which caused damage to his teeth and knocked him to the ground, resulting in hospital treatment for concussion.
The stranger stated he believed he blacked out during the attack.
The woman refused to cooperate with police when they arrived.
Defence solicitor Sonia Bhalla described Rice as turning into 'a bit of a monster' when intoxicated, noting he was going through a difficult period after providing evidence against an abuser.
Court proceedings revealed Rice was still in a relationship with the woman and wanted the relationship to work.
He pleaded guilty to causing actual bodily harm to the man, assaulting his partner, and resisting police.
Rice had been on a two-year community order since September for previous assaults on his partner and criminal damage, all admitted.
The court extended his community order until January 2024, requiring him to undertake rehabilitative activities, a domestic violence program, and 170 hours of unpaid work.
He was also ordered to pay £150 in compensation to the man, a £90 surcharge, and £85 in prosecution costs.
The judge expressed hope Rice would put his drinking behind him, attributing his violent behavior to alcohol.
