Scotland Northampton Rapist
In a case that has shocked both Scotland and England, Jack Grant, a notorious sex offender with a long history of heinous crimes, was handed a second life sentence yesterday at the High Court in Edinburgh. Grant, now 54 years old, has a criminal record spanning over three decades, during which he committed a series of brutal sexual offenses against women and children across multiple locations, including Northampton and his hometown of Broxburn, Scotland.

Grant’s criminal activities began when he was still a schoolboy. One of his earliest known victims was a nine-year-old girl in Livingston, whom he repeatedly raped. His predatory behavior did not stop there. Over the years, Grant’s victims endured unimaginable suffering, with some subjected to violent assaults, sexual abuse, and other forms of brutality in various settings. His pattern of offending extended from Scotland to England, where he fled to escape allegations and continued his assaultive behavior.

In 2011, Grant was sentenced to life imprisonment in Northampton after being convicted of 13 offenses against three young children. The court heard that Grant’s crimes involved repeated acts of sexual violence, including rapes and assaults, which he committed over a period of three years. Judge Charles Wide QC described Grant as a dangerous offender whose actions posed a significant threat to the public, especially to young girls. Grant was placed on the sex offenders’ register for life and was given an indefinite sentence for public protection, meaning he would only be released when deemed safe by the parole authorities.

Despite his incarceration in England, Grant’s past crimes in Scotland came to light, leading to his extradition and subsequent trial in Edinburgh. During the proceedings, victims of his earlier offenses bravely came forward to testify. These included a woman assaulted in Livingston in 1985, who was subjected to rape, indecent assault, and violence, including being attacked with a bottle, slapped, punched, kicked, and even having cigarettes stubbed out on her body. Grant also inflicted physical injuries such as cutting her leg with a knife and tattooing her against her will. Additionally, he used another woman as a punching bag at flats in Glasgow and molested a nine-year-old girl in the city.

At yesterday’s sentencing, Lord Burns emphasized the severity of Grant’s crimes, stating, “The sexual abuse of these complainers, as you must appreciate, represents some of the most serious encountered in these courts.” The judge highlighted Grant’s refusal to accept responsibility or show remorse, indicating that he remains a significant risk to any female within his influence. Grant’s history of manipulation and violence was also acknowledged, with Lord Burns noting that Grant had already served ten years in an English prison but continued to pose a danger.

One particularly disturbing case involved an eight-year-old girl in Stranraer, who was abused in 2010 in what Lord Burns described as “the most serious fashion.” The court heard that Grant’s pattern of offending was relentless, with his control over victims often extending to physical violence and psychological manipulation. His actions included assaulting women with objects, stabbing, and even tattooing one victim. His criminal record also includes a series of violent and controlling behaviors that have left lasting scars on his victims.

Legal representatives for Grant argued that he would need to satisfy parole boards in both England and Scotland before any possibility of release. As part of his sentence, Grant was ordered to serve a minimum of five years in prison and was placed on the sex offenders’ register indefinitely. If ever released, he would be on license and subject to recall if he reoffended.

Police Scotland’s Detective Inspector Nick Brookfield condemned Grant’s predatory nature, stating, “Jack Grant is, in every sense of the word, a predator who targeted young people over a number of years and subjected them to horrific levels of physical and sexual abuse across various parts of Scotland.” He praised the bravery of the victims who came forward, acknowledging that their courage was instrumental in bringing Grant to justice. Fraser Gibson, the Procurator Fiscal for sexual offenses, also commended the victims’ strength and urged others in similar situations to seek help from police.

Reflecting on the case, Judge Wide QC remarked on the seriousness of Grant’s offenses and the devastating impact on his victims. The judge emphasized that Grant’s repeated acts of violence and sexual assault had destroyed the childhoods of many victims, and his ongoing denial of guilt only compounded the harm. The case underscores the importance of vigilant law enforcement and the bravery of victims in confronting such heinous crimes, ensuring that offenders like Jack Grant are held accountable and kept off the streets for as long as possible.
