IVAN ZELENKA'S SHOCKING CRIME IN BOURNEMOUTH AND DUBLIN: A DECADE OF MONITORING FOR SEX OFFENDER
In April 2017, a disturbing case emerged involving Ivan Zelenka, a man whose actions have left a lasting impact on a young girl and the communities of Bournemouth and Dublin. The incident dates back to late July 2015, when Zelenka, then 52 years old, was alone with a young girl whose identity remains protected.
During their encounter, Zelenka approached the girl in a manner described as hesitant, and his behavior was later scrutinized by police and court officials.
According to court proceedings, Zelenka had suffered a stroke just three months prior to this encounter, which he later claimed affected his speech.
He told police that he had said the word ‘knackered’ rather than ‘naked’ when speaking to the girl.
Despite this, he admitted to causing or inviting a child under the age of 13 to engage in sexual activity, a serious offense that led to his conviction.
Additionally, he faced two counts of possessing indecent photographs of children, which were discovered during a police investigation.
Prosecutor Dawn Hyland detailed the distress caused to the young girl, who was left “very distressed and quite hysterical” after Zelenka’s approach.
She recounted that Zelenka had hesitantly told the girl that he had been “very naughty” and had taken pictures of her while she was playing.
The girl was uncertain whether Zelenka intended to photograph her or paint her naked, but the implication was clear enough to cause alarm.
Police officers acting on information from the girl’s parents raided Zelenka’s residence in Bournemouth, where they seized various electronic devices, including a camera and an SD card.
It was revealed that some images had been deleted from the device, raising suspicions of attempted concealment.
Further searches uncovered two computers, which contained indecent images; however, these images did not include the girl in question.
During police interviews, Zelenka, who is now residing on Booterstown Avenue in County Dublin, claimed that the girl must have misheard him.
He insisted that he had actually said the word ‘knackered’ and suggested that the images found on his devices were the result of pop-ups or accidental downloads from zip files he believed contained adult pornography.
His explanations did little to mitigate the severity of his actions.
A victim impact statement, written by the young girl, was read aloud in court.
She expressed her fear that Zelenka might seek revenge after she reported the incident to the police.
The girl shared her feelings of having to grow up quickly, stating, “I suddenly felt I had to stop being a child and start thinking about grown-up things,” and admitted to feeling terrified of being alone.
In sentencing, Zelenka received a 12-month prison sentence, suspended for two years.
He was also ordered to complete a 60-day rehabilitation program and is subject to the requirements of the sex offender register and a sexual harm prevention order for a period of ten years.
Judge Peter Johnson acknowledged the resilience of the young girl and her parents, stating that they “should be extremely proud” and praising her victim impact statement as evidence of her strength and public-spirited nature.
