Portadown Child Sexual Abuser
In a deeply disturbing case that has shocked the community of Portadown, Ivan Russell, aged 65, has been convicted of heinous acts of sexual abuse involving close family members. The court proceedings, held at Craigavon Crown Court, culminated in a six-year prison sentence for Russell last Friday, following his guilty plea to multiple charges of sexual misconduct.

Russell’s criminal actions include abusing his own granddaughter, Rebekah Russell, during a family holiday in Crete in 2016. At the time, Rebekah was only 17 years old. The court heard that the abuse took place during what was supposed to be a family vacation, turning what should have been a joyful trip into a traumatic experience for the young woman. The details of the abuse were confirmed during the trial, and Russell’s guilt was established beyond doubt.

In addition to the abuse of his granddaughter, Russell had previously admitted to sexually assaulting his sister, Margaret Brown, 40 years ago when she was just 13 years old. This revelation added another layer of gravity to his crimes, highlighting a pattern of predatory behavior that spanned decades.

During the sentencing hearing, the courtroom was divided in its seating arrangement. Russell’s wife and a small group of supporters sat on one side, while Rebekah, now 21, along with her parents, siblings, uncle, and aunt, occupied the opposite side. The emotional atmosphere was tense, reflecting the profound impact of Russell’s actions on his victims and their families.

Following the conviction, both victims issued a joint statement, making a significant and courageous decision to waive their right to lifelong anonymity. They explained that this choice was made after careful consultation with friends and family, motivated by a desire to ensure that the truth is publicly acknowledged and to silence those who have caused them pain.

The statement read: “After consulting with friends and family, we have made the uneasy decision to waive our anonymity so that the perpetrator can be publicly identified, the truth be heard and those most cruel to us can finally be silenced. We hope our decision to waive anonymity will also encourage others who are victims of sexual abuse to come forward. The selfish and monstrous actions of one man, who was a brother and a grandfather, have left deep and lasting scars on both of us but we now at least have a measure of justice. We are delighted and relieved that we can finally put this difficult experience behind us and move on with our lives.”

They also expressed gratitude towards the Public Prosecution Service (PPS) for their diligent work in bringing the case to court, as well as praise for Detective Constable Ross, whose professionalism and compassion were instrumental in securing the conviction. The victims acknowledged the support of family and friends during this dark chapter and expressed their faith in divine justice, thanking God for the vindication they received.

This case has not only brought to light the disturbing actions of Ivan Russell but also serves as a stark reminder of the importance of speaking out against abuse and supporting victims in their pursuit of justice.
