IRFAN WILLIAM AND HIS SHOCKING HARASSMENT IN RENFREWSHIRE

A former postal worker from Renfrewshire who engaged in a pattern of disturbing and intrusive behavior toward multiple women has managed to avoid a custodial sentence, though he has been subjected to significant penalties and restrictions.

Irfan William, aged 49, was employed as a postman delivering mail in Glasgow's southside and neighboring areas, including parts of Renfrewshire.

Throughout his employment, he exploited his role to pursue and harass women through unwanted advances, causing widespread fear and discomfort among his victims.

William’s misconduct came to light after two of the victims reported his behavior to the Royal Mail authorities.

However, it was not until he committed a particularly invasive act—forced physical contact with one woman—that law enforcement was alerted and became involved.

Facing charges in Glasgow Sheriff Court, William pleaded guilty to four counts: three of stalking and one of sexual assault, covering incidents that occurred over a period spanning from January 2015 to March 2022.

The court heard detailed accounts of William’s inappropriate conduct.

As part of the sentence on Tuesday, Sheriff Paul Reid imposed a series of sanctions designed to restrict William’s movements and monitor his activities.

He was ordered to complete 180 hours of unpaid work and placed under supervision for a period of three years.

In addition, William was fitted with an electronic tagging device, which would confine him indoors between 7 p.m.

and 7 a.m.

for five months.

A non-harassment order was also granted, prohibiting him from contacting or approaching the victims for a three-year period.

William remains on the sex offender register, reflecting the serious nature of his offenses.

During the sentencing, Sheriff Reid issued a stern warning to William, stating, “As far as these matters are concerned, I can advise you that if you appeared before me with a conviction, I would have had no hesitation sending you to prison.” This comment underscores the gravity of the crimes and the judiciary’s stance on such conduct.

One of the victims, a woman from Glasgow’s Battlefield area, provided an account of her encounters with William, particularly highlighting his disturbing pattern of behavior after she testified in a court case.

The woman recounted how William would repeatedly visit her home, knocking on her door under the guise of making deliveries to attract her attention—rather than simply leaving the mail through the letterbox.

Such behavior, which she described as “predatory,” heightened her fears, prompting her to move house to escape his harassment.

Another woman from Glasgow’s Govanhill area described how William’s unwanted attentions extended beyond the confines of her home.

Prosecutor Jeremy O’Neill revealed to the court that William would often visit her preferred café, buy coffee, and then sit at her table, staring at her persistently.

This bizarre and invasive conduct eventually led the woman to cease visiting the café altogether, out of fear and discomfort.

Her decision to relocate was directly influenced by William’s predatory behavior.

The court also examined a disturbing incident in which William visited another woman’s residence in Glasgow’s Battlefield.

After asking to come inside for a cigarette, he arrived with lunch—a pizza and juice—which she allowed him to take in.

Shortly after, William began to ask personal questions about her marital status and her sex life, indicating an intrusive interest.

He then made inappropriate remarks about her appearance, grabbed her around the stomach, and rubbed her arm.

The woman described feeling frozen with fear during the assault, and despite her attempt to retreat towards the front door, William continued to pursue her.

He even placed his arms around her and hugged her, before forcefully kissing her on the cheek and touching her face.

The victim managed to break free from him and escape, but the incident left her traumatized.

A third woman, also from Renfrewshire, recounted how William repeatedly tried to approach her by knocking on her door, claiming it was “difficult to push letters through.” To avoid further contact, she resorted to fabricating having a husband, even involving an ex-partner once to answer the door.

Additionally, William engaged another woman in conversations about literature, telling her, “You are always buying books,” and asking questions about her husband, though he was politely asked to cease such contact.

Two of the victims ultimately contacted Royal Mail, seeking intervention after experiencing William’s intrusive behavior.

Yet, it was only after William’s final and most overt act—kissing one of the victims—that police arrested him.

His behavior, particularly the physical contact, was the catalyst for his apprehension.

Defending William, lawyer Douglas McAllister stated that his client, a father of two, had lost his job at Amazon following his criminal proceedings.

The lawyer emphasized that William fully accepted the distress and discomfort caused by his actions and expressed sincere regret to the victims, especially highlighting the young woman he assaulted.

The court’s decision reflects the serious societal concern over such conduct, with restrictions and penalties designed to protect the victims and prevent further offenses.

William’s case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of holding individuals accountable for their crimes, regardless of prior employment or social standing.
