IMRAN MAJEED CAUGHT IN GRAVESEND PAEDOPHILE STING NEAR HARLOW
In February 2019, a disturbing case unfolded involving Imran Majeed, a man from Gravesend, Kent, who was caught in a paedophile sting operation near Harlow, Essex. The incident began when Majeed, 36 years old, was en route to meet what he believed was a 13-year-old girl for sexual activity.
He had arranged the meeting at The Galleria shopping centre in Hatfield, Hertfordshire, and had prepared his vehicle with blankets and a mattress, indicating his intent to engage in sexual acts.
On the day of the planned meeting, Majeed stopped his van in a car park outside the Toby Carvery restaurant in Harlow.
Unbeknownst to him, he was being watched by members of volunteer groups Justice for the Innocent (JFTI) and Scorpion Hunters UK, who had previously attempted to meet him but were stood up.
This time, they had set up a double decoy, including an adult woman, to lure him into the trap.
When Majeed approached the decoys and asked about parking fees, the groups identified him and explained their purpose.
During the encounter, Majeed was detained and police were called.
He was arrested on suspicion of attempting to meet a child for sexual purposes.
Throughout the live-streamed sting, Majeed initially denied the allegations but later admitted guilt during a plea hearing at Chelmsford Crown Court on January 21.
The court proceedings revealed that Majeed had initiated contact with a decoy account named 'Karen' on Facebook on October 21, 2018.
The decoy, operated by Justice for the Innocent, was portrayed as a 13-year-old girl, and their conversations quickly turned sexual.
In the course of their online exchanges, Majeed was led to believe he was communicating with a minor under 16 who was at school.
He groomed the decoy, sharing explicit images, including photographs of topless adults and performing oral sex, and discussed meeting for sexual activities.
He expressed willingness to engage in kissing, hugging, and even penetrative sex, and requested naked photographs from the decoy, offering to send his own.
Three days after Christmas, Majeed planned to meet the decoy at The Galleria shopping centre.
He believed he was on his way to meet a child, but in reality, he was approaching a decoy created by volunteers dedicated to preventing child exploitation.
The arrest was made in a Harlow car park, where Majeed approached the decoys and asked about parking, unaware of the setup.
At the time of his arrest, Majeed was residing on Austin Road in Gravesend.
He refused to comment during police interviews but later pleaded guilty to two serious child sex offences.
The court heard that the entire operation was part of a sting to protect children from grooming and exploitation.
During the sentencing hearing, Judge Gratwicke emphasized the importance of protecting young children and girls from predators like Majeed.
Despite the severity of the offences, Majeed was spared immediate imprisonment and received a suspended sentence.
The judge's decision left some members of the involved volunteer groups, including James from Justice for the Innocent, feeling 'shocked' at the leniency of the punishment.
Overall, this case highlights the ongoing efforts of volunteer groups to combat online grooming and the dangers posed by individuals like Imran Majeed, who traveled from Gravesend to Harlow with the intent to commit serious sexual offences against minors.
