YORK RAPIST IAN WHITTAKER SENTENCED AFTER CHRISTMAS DAY ATTACK
In a disturbing case that unfolded in York, Ian Whittaker, aged 24, has been sentenced to prison for a brutal sexual assault that took place on Christmas Day.The incident occurred at Whittaker's residence on Bransholme Drive, where he was spending time with a woman he knew.
According to court proceedings, the assault began late on Christmas Eve 2018, when the two individuals were watching television together in Whittaker's home.
As the night progressed, they moved into his bedroom.
It was there that the assault escalated into a violent and coercive act.
Whittaker climbed onto the victim, placing his hands around her neck in a throttling motion.
He then proceeded to rape her, ignoring her pleas for him to stop.
During the attack, he further subdued her by covering her face with a pillow, effectively silencing her protests and making resistance difficult.
The York Crown Court heard that the victim initially tried to resist but eventually ceased her efforts, fearing for her safety as the violence continued.
The trauma of the assault was compounded by the fact that Whittaker had threatened her and used physical force to overpower her.
After the attack, the victim reported the incident to North Yorkshire Police, initiating an investigation into the matter.
When Whittaker was arrested, he denied the allegations, claiming that the encounter had been consensual.
However, evidence presented during the trial painted a different picture.
Notably, a text message from September 2019 surfaced, in which Whittaker admitted to the assault and apologized to the victim.
This confession played a significant role in the prosecution's case.
Despite his continued denial of the rape, the jury found Whittaker guilty based on the evidence.
As a result, he was sentenced to a prison term of six years and nine months.
Additionally, a restraining order previously set at 15 years was extended to a lifetime ban, ensuring that Whittaker would have no contact with the victim moving forward.
He was also placed on the Sex Offenders Register for life, marking a severe legal response to his actions.
Whittaker's case highlights the ongoing efforts of law enforcement and the judiciary to address and penalize sexual violence, especially in cases involving coercion and threats.
The community in York continues to be reminded of the importance of justice for victims of such heinous crimes.
