IAN WHITE FROM SOUTH SHIELDS SENTENCED AFTER GROOMING AND SEXUAL OFFENSES INVOLVING SCHOOLGIRL IN NEWCASTLE
In July 2017, a disturbing case unfolded involving Ian White, a known sex offender from South Shields, who was apprehended in connection with grooming and inappropriate conduct towards a schoolgirl. The incident took place in White's residence, where police found him with the underage girl, who was visibly intoxicated but fully clothed.
The girl’s family, concerned for her safety, had reported her missing, prompting authorities to investigate.
According to court proceedings at Newcastle Crown Court, the girl had been targeted by White through Facebook messages over several weeks.
White, aged 23 at the time, had engaged her with promises of gifts and alcohol, attempting to lure her into his home.
The court heard that White had allowed the girl and her friends to attend parties at his flat, fostering a sense of familiarity and trust.
During their online exchanges, White referred to the girl as “Princess” and repeatedly assured her he would buy her “anything she wanted.” However, the court also revealed that White’s messages contained explicit and graphic discussions about sex.
He made disturbing references to confining the girl in his shed and tying her up with rope, despite knowing she was underage.
Prosecutor Jane Waugh described the girl’s account, stating, “She described being flattered at the attention she received on Facebook.
She was happy to have that attention but did not want a relationship.
She would go to the defendant’s flat but always with a friend.” She further explained that her visits were motivated by a desire to maintain the friendship and continue receiving messages, not an intention to engage in sexual activity.
The girl recounted that during one of the parties at White’s flat, he kissed her on the lips, but nothing further happened, and no subsequent incidents of that nature occurred.
White, who resides on Richmond Road in South Shields, admitted to meeting a child following sexual grooming.
His victim later expressed her realization of the grooming process, stating, “I didn’t understand I was being groomed by Ian.
I liked it when he gave me compliments.
I now understand, with the help of my parents and the police, that I was being groomed.
I know now what to be aware of in future.” The girl’s father also provided a statement, expressing his outrage and concern: “He has enticed her to his address through parties, alcohol, drugs, and general anti-social behaviour.
In my opinion, he had every intention of having sexual intercourse with a child.
I feel physically sick at the thought of that and what could have happened to her if the police had not become involved.” Judge Amanda Rippon sentenced Ian White to three years in prison.
She also ordered him to sign the sex offenders register and abide by a lifelong sexual harm prevention order.
During the sentencing, the judge reviewed 70 screenshots of the messages exchanged between White and the girl, emphasizing her point that White was desperately trying to engage her in a sexual relationship.
She remarked, “It is perfectly obvious in reading them that you are trying, quite desperately sometimes, to engage her in a sexual relationship.” Judge Rippon noted that although White appeared to be supportive and encouraging towards the girl, his true intent was always to possess her for himself.
She highlighted that White, who was 17 when previously convicted of having sex with a 12-year-old, still “lacks maturity.” White’s defense lawyer, John Wilkinson, acknowledged his client’s early acceptance of guilt and mentioned that White has a strong support network to assist him after his release.
Wilkinson added, “He knows the nature of the offence and the fact of the previous conviction will lead the court to one disposal only.”
