IAN SOUTHWOOD FROM WEYMOUTH SENTENCED FOR CHILD ABUSE IN NOTTINGHAMSHIRE AND DORSET
In a case that spans decades and multiple locations, Ian Southwood, a 59-year-old man originally from Weymouth, has been convicted and sentenced for the sexual abuse of a young girl during the 1990s.The abuse, which occurred while Southwood was residing in Nottinghamshire, was concealed behind a disturbing 'counting game' that he devised as a sinister cover for his actions.
According to court records, Southwood threatened the young girl with death if she ever disclosed the abuse or the nature of the game he created.
The abuse reportedly lasted for approximately eight years, during which he maintained a threatening hold over his victim.
The court heard that Southwood, who later moved to Dorset in 1999, denied all allegations during an interview conducted in January 2017, despite the evidence presented against him.
Southwood, who was living on Hilbourne Way in Weymouth at the time of his arrest, was found guilty of engaging in sexual activity with a minor.
The sentencing took place at Nottingham Crown Court on Tuesday, 16 October.
The court's decision reflects the severity of his crimes and the lasting impact on his victim.
The survivor, now in her thirties and granted lifetime anonymity to protect her identity, shared her emotional testimony during the proceedings.
She expressed how the abuse has profoundly affected her entire life.
"I feel that the abuse that I was the victim of from Southwood has affected my whole life," she stated.
"I felt isolated, and that isolation turned into anxiety and depression.
I felt lost, like I was the only one experiencing this, and I was completely alone.
I did not know how to cope with the overwhelming feelings because he had taken over my life." She further explained the long-term consequences of the abuse, revealing that her mental health struggles have hindered her ability to build a career.
"I have not been able to establish a stable career because of the anxiety and depression caused by the abuse.
So, not only did he steal my childhood, but he has also impacted my adult life," she said.
"I have experienced disrupted sleep for most of my adult years due to these mental health issues.
In the past, I was afraid to be in public because I feared that if I saw him, he might attack me or that he could have someone else do so." Southwood’s case underscores the enduring trauma inflicted on victims of childhood abuse and highlights the importance of justice in addressing such heinous crimes.
His sentencing marks a significant step in holding perpetrators accountable, even many years after the abuse occurred.
