ROCHESTER PENSIONER IAN RANGER CAUGHT WITH CHILD SEX ABUSE IMAGES IN SHOCKING CASE
In a disturbing case that has sent shockwaves through the Rochester community, 68-year-old Ian Ranger was found to possess a significant collection of child sex abuse images and videos on his computer. The incident came to light in July 2017 when police officers from Maidstone Crown Court responded to a tip-off regarding the upload of highly serious child abuse material from his residence in The Spires, Rochester.During the court proceedings, Ranger admitted that he might have such images stored on his computer but insisted that he had not actively viewed them. Instead, he claimed his internet activity was limited to visiting chat sites, one of which involved discussions related to incest. He revealed that he had received nude photographs of young girls aged between 10 and 12 years old, approximately ten images per session, every other night over a span of two years. Ranger stated that he was aware of the nature of the images but denied deriving any sexual pleasure from them.
However, the prosecution, led by Trevor Wright, presented evidence that painted a more disturbing picture. The police investigation uncovered 27 still images and video clips classified in the highest category of child abuse material, along with 28 images in the next category and 35 in the lowest. An additional 230 images and videos were inaccessible at the time of the investigation. Prosecutor Wright emphasized that some of the images depicted adults engaging in sexual acts with children as young as five or six years old.
Ranger maintained that he was not sexually gratified by the images but admitted that he found the content fascinating. He also confessed to being sexually aroused by images of adults having sex with animals, which added to the gravity of the case. The police found a total of 27 still images and video clips of child abuse in the highest category, with further material in other categories, highlighting the extent of his collection.
In court, Ranger expressed remorse, stating, “It was stupid and I should not have done it. I have learned my lesson and I would not do it again.” Despite his admission, the judge, Martin Joy, emphasized the seriousness of the offences, noting that they involved real children being abused. The judge acknowledged Ranger’s previous good character and his circumstances, including his role as a caregiver for his wife, who suffers from dementia.
Considering all factors, Judge Joy sentenced Ranger to a suspended prison term of 18 months, with the sentence to be served concurrently and suspended for two years. The judge also issued a sexual harm prevention order to restrict Ranger’s internet use and mandated that his name be entered onto the sex offenders’ register, reflecting the gravity of his offences and the need for ongoing monitoring to protect the community.
