July 2013 Darlington area sex offender, branded “real danger” to ALL females, jailed for 12 years A TEENAGE sex offender was today jailed for 12 years after being branded “a real danger” by a judge.

Ian Pritchard, from Middleton-St-George, near Darlington, was found guilty of a string of serious attacks after a trial last month.

The 19-year-old was said to have been charming and engaging when first meeting his victims – who he contacted on Facebook.

A darker side of the teenager soon emerged and led to him being described as a Jekyll and Hyde character.

At Teesside Crown Court, Judge Peter Bowers said: “I am satisfied that you are really an extremely devious and manipulative young man and present quite a clear danger to any woman or girl.” Pritchard was found guilty of 13 charges of rape, sexual activity with a child, sexual assault and assault after a two-week trial.

His four victims all gave evidence during the trial and told how he abused them physically, emotionally and sexually.

One was punched and kicked and branded with a red-hot cigarette lighter, while one was raped while she slept.

His barrister, Dan Cordey, said: “There is hope and there is time for tis young man to mature and also time for him to be provided with the proper assistance while in the prison system.” Pritchard, of Water View, Middleton-St-George, was also put on the sex offenders’ register for life.

Ian Pritchard tutted, shook his head, laughed and shouted out abuse as each guilty verdict was delivered by the jury foreman.

The 19-year-old also constantly argued with one of the two officers flanking him in the dock atTeesside Crown Court today.

As the jury panel of nine women and three men left – having earlier been branded “divvies” from the dock – he yelled: “Sleep well.” Relatives in the public gallery urged him to keep quiet, but he said “off it” and added: “Just f***ing idiots, that’s what they are.” Pritchard, of Water View, Middleton-St-George, near Darlington, was remanded in custody and will be sentenced in a fortnight.

Judge Peter Bowers described some of his attacks as “semi-sadistic” and said he wanted to see medical reports on the teenager.

He said a serious features of the case is that Pritchard had targeted vulnerable people “looking for flattery and a bit of attention”.

Pritchard was found guilty of 13 of the remaining 15 charges of rape, sexual activity with a child, sexual assault and assault.

His barrister, Dan Cordey, told the judge after the convictions: “Ian Pritchard knows he faces a substantial custodial sentence.” The teenager branded one victim with a red hot cigarette lighter, kicked her and sexually assaulted her with his fist, the court heard.

A wine bottle featured in attacks on two of his accusers and one was abused while she slept, said prosecutor Richard Bennett.

Judge Bowers told the jurors they could be excused from further duty for the next ten years because of the harrowing nature of the case.

He said: “You have had an insight into behaviour you might not usually have seen or heard about.”
