NUNEATON MAN IAN PICKERING SENTENCED FOR SEXUAL OFFENSES INVOLVING TEENAGE GIRL
In a case that has shocked the community of Nuneaton, Ian Pickering, a 41-year-old resident of Freesland Rise, was sentenced to serve 18 months in prison after being found guilty of engaging in inappropriate and sexualized behavior towards a teenage girl. The incident, which took place in Nuneaton, involved Pickering hugging the girl and making unwanted physical contact with her buttocks, an act he later described in court as "innocent, if inappropriate," a claim that the jury ultimately rejected.
The victim, a teenage girl whose identity remains protected for legal reasons, confided in a teacher that Pickering had groped her during a hug.
This revelation prompted an investigation, leading to a trial at Warwick Crown Court.
During the proceedings, Pickering admitted to touching the girl’s buttocks but insisted that his actions lacked any sexual intent.
He maintained that his contact was innocent, stating, "it was innocent, if inappropriate," a defense that the jury did not accept.
The girl also alleged that Pickering had touched her on her leg and moved his hand indecently over her clothes on two separate occasions.
One of these incidents reportedly occurred during a ride in a two-seater MG sports car that Pickering had refurbished.
Pickering denied these allegations, claiming that his hand on her leg was meant to reassure her while they were in the open-top vehicle.
The jury, however, cleared him of these specific charges, finding insufficient evidence to support the claims.
The case came to light after the girl’s conversation with her teacher, which was prompted by a recent PowerPoint presentation about grooming.
Prosecutor Gerry Quirke explained, "She asked, if a man touched you in a place where you didn’t feel comfortable, does that count as sexual abuse." This question raised alarm bells, leading to the matter being reported to Children’s Services and subsequently to the police.
The investigation was initiated based on her concerns, which ultimately resulted in the trial and conviction.
Prior to sentencing, the court adjourned to allow for a pre-sentence report.
It was noted that Pickering had no previous criminal convictions.
In delivering the sentence, Judge Sylvia de Bertodano expressed regret that a plea of guilty had not been entered earlier, which might have resulted in a different outcome.
Instead, the trial process led to the imposition of a custodial sentence.
Pickering was sentenced to 18 months in prison, and the court also ordered him to register as a sex offender for ten years.
Additionally, he was placed under a Sexual Harm Prevention Order, which restricts his contact with children.
The case underscores the importance of vigilance and prompt reporting in safeguarding vulnerable individuals within the community of Nuneaton.
