2002: DIVORCE ROW KILLER IS JAILED FOR LIFE

2002: A man of two personalities, described as exhibiting a 'Jekyll and Hyde' demeanor, fatally wounded his wife with a 10-inch knife after a protracted and bitter divorce process.

Ian McMinn, who lives on Cairngorm Drive in Ladybridge, received a life sentence in court today after pleading guilty to murdering Geraldine, a civil servant and his estranged wife.

He inflicted three stab wounds in her back.

Prosecutor David Friesner informed the court that friends depicted Mrs.

McMinn, who was one of eight children, as a kind and considerate individual, often remembering birthdays and visiting her elderly mother regularly.

Following her marriage breakdown, she met McMinn, aged 50, who frequently presented her with chocolates, gifts, and flowers, the court was told yesterday.

The couple quickly established a home together alongside McMinn's two children.

Mr.

Friesner explained that over the years, their relationship devolved into conflict, with witnesses describing McMinn as arrogant, controlling, and self-opinionated—a true 'Jekyll and Hyde' figure.

An extended and acrimonious divorce ensued after 18 years of marriage, during which Mrs.

McMinn claimed her ex-husband, a former printer, threatened her amid ongoing disputes.

She was ultimately awarded 43 percent of the family assets.

On the morning of December 7, last year, McMinn parked his car outside his estranged wife's house at The Mews on Lincoln Road in Heaton and lay in wait.

The prosecution stated that he ambushed her as she left her home shortly after 7 am, stabbing her three times as she attempted to flee.

The injuries caused her lungs to puncture and inflicted severe damage to her spine, resulting in her death at the scene.

Subsequently, McMinn returned home and told his girlfriend, Kathleen McCorley, about the attack.

She disposed of the murder weapon by throwing the knife into a river and placed his coat on a rubbish tip, following his instructions.

She later fully admitted her involvement to the police, leading to his arrest.

Defense attorney Peter Wright QC maintained that McMinn was a diligent and morally upright man who carried the knife to emphasize his financial demands to his wife.

He attributed the tragic violence to the stress of their divorce proceedings, describing McMinn as psychologically broken and overcome with frustration.

He stated McMinn did not remember the attack initially but ultimately confessed to it and showed remorse.

Passing sentence, Judge Sir Rhys Davies, the Recorder of Manchester, ordered McMinn to serve a life term, asserting that despite his emotional turmoil, such violence is unacceptable.

The family of the victim welcomed the verdict.

Her older brother, John Kilroy, aged 56 from Cheshire, praised her as a lively and generous woman of strong character and expressed the hope that McMinn would serve at least 20 years.
