IAN MCDONALD FROM COUNTY ANTRIM ORDERED TO SIGN SEX OFFENDERS REGISTER AFTER ADMITTING DECADES-OLD ABUSE CASE
In a significant development at Antrim Crown Court, Ian James Alexander McDonald, a 69-year-old resident of Broughshane on Clonetrace Road, was formally ordered to register as a sex offender following his admission of indecent assault charges that date back over four decades.The proceedings took place via video-link from McDonald's legal representatives' office, where he pleaded guilty to two separate counts of indecent assault.
These charges pertain to incidents involving two male victims, with the alleged offenses occurring between February 28, 1980, and April 6, 1982.
Although the court did not delve into the detailed facts of the case during the hearing, prosecutor Michael Chambers described the case as straightforward.
However, he cautioned the presiding judge, Patricia Smyth, that there could be concerns regarding McDonald's potential dangerousness, which might influence sentencing considerations.
Defense counsel Neil Connor requested a postponement of the sentencing to allow for a pre-sentence report to be prepared by probation services.
This request was granted, and McDonald was released on bail pending the sentencing hearing scheduled for March 30.
During the proceedings, Judge Smyth made it clear to McDonald that, in light of his guilty pleas and confessions, he is now legally required to sign the sex offenders register.
The judge emphasized the seriousness of the matter and the long-standing nature of the allegations, which have only now come to light after many years.
