IAN KELLY SENTENCED TO 18 MONTHS IN HALIFAX FOR ONLINE SEXUAL OFFENSES IN BRADFORD COURT

A man from Halifax, Ian Kelly, has been sentenced to 18 months in prison after admitting to engaging in sexually explicit conversations with what he believed was a 13-year-old girl.

His actions were uncovered through an undercover operation carried out by Paedophile Hunters, an online vigilant group dedicated to catching individuals attempting to exploit minors.

According to the evidence presented at Bradford Crown Court, Kelly, aged 60, confessed to trying to persuade what he thought was a young girl to partake in sexual activities.

Kelly’s address was identified as Byron Street, Halifax.

The investigation began in May 2021 when Kelly started communicating with the decoy, who posed as a 13-year-old girl living in Leeds.

The decoy’s role was to engage potential offenders and gather evidence of their intent to commit sexual offenses.

Prosecutor Carmel Pearson detailed that Kelly was instructed by the decoy to keep their conversations secret.

Over time, their exchanges became increasingly sexualized.

Kelly expressed a desire to meet the girl to kiss, cuddle, and be her first in everything.

By September 7, 2021, Kelly explicitly stated his intention to kiss every part of her body and asked her to remove her clothes, encouraging her to lie naked on a bed.

He also complimented her photograph, calling her beautiful, and professed love for her.

Although he wanted to share images of himself, he ultimately did not send any.

The cover was blown on October 16, 2021, when members of the Paedophile Hunters group visited Kelly’s home and contacted the police.

Law enforcement officers seized electronic devices from his residence, which contained the chat logs of the explicit conversation.

These devices provided concrete evidence of Kelly’s intent and communication with the decoy.

Further court records revealed that Kelly had a prior conviction for indecent assault on a woman dating back to 1988.

His recent criminal activity, specifically the battery conviction, had previously resulted in him losing his employment with the Royal Mail.

This background was considered during sentencing.

In mitigation, Kelly’s lawyer, John Bottomley, argued that Kelly’s actions were attempts rather than actual offenses against a real child.

The court heard that since his arrest, Kelly had been living with the mental burden of his actions, describing it as having “the Sword of Damocles hanging over him.” He also described Kelly’s loneliness, which was compounded by the loss of his job and his drinking problem, as factors contributing to his offending.

During the hearing, Recorder Christopher Rose emphasized the severity of Kelly’s online conduct, noting that by September 2021, Kelly’s messages had become highly explicit.

The court stated, “This was in your mind a genuine 13-year-old child that you were having conversations with.” Despite acknowledging Kelly’s loneliness and isolation, the judge stressed that the conversations he had with the decoy could have caused enormous harm to a real minor.

Kelly assured his probation officer that he had no intention of following through with the sexual suggestions, but the harm they could have caused was significant.

As part of his sentence, Kelly was placed under a Sexual Harm Prevention Order for five years, and he is required to sign the sex offender register for the same period.

The case serves as a stark reminder of the deadly serious implications of online sexual grooming and the importance of vigilance in protecting minors from exploitation.
