June 2017 Serial Penygroes rapist sentenced to 12 years in prison A Gwynedd man has been jailed for 12 years after being found guilty of repeatedly raping a vulnerable middle-aged woman. Ian Clifford Jones, 47, of High Street, Penygroes, was convicted of five night-time rapes of the woman over a two year period. Sentencing him at Caernarfon crown court today, Recorder Geraint Walters told Jones that he took advantage of a “very vulnerable person”. He added: ”The jury’s verdicts reflect a course of conduct by you during which you repeatedly raped your victim.” The judge described the defendant as a heavy drinker and said that his judgement had been “blurred” by alcohol. He also said that Jones “fully appreciated” that his victim had difficulties. The judge told how the victim had physically tried to get Jones to stop and screamed and cried. She said Jones tried to get his own way by saying he loved her. “She said you told her if she continued to resist you would make her do it,” recorder Walters remarked. Jones’ crimes came to light after he was was investigated by North Wales Police Amethyst Team – a team dedicated to investigating serious sexual offences. His DNA was found at the scene and the court heard the defendant had 88 offences on his record. Prosecuting counsel Jayne La Grua said there was “specific targeting of a vulnerable victim.” A sexual harm prevention order was imposed on him which is set to continue indefinitely. Recorder Walters also ordered Jones to register as a sex offender for life. “A custodial sentence is inevitable for an offence of this sort,” the judge added.
