IAN HOWDON AND SHOCKING SEXUAL ASSAULT IN SUNDERLAND
A man named Ian Howdon, aged 21, has been sentenced to a lengthy prison term after committing a serious sexual assault in Sunderland.The incident involved Howdon systematically intoxifying a woman with alcohol, ultimately leading to an assault that took place when she was unconscious and unable to give consent.
According to court records, Howdon, who was only 19 years old at the time of the offense, deliberately waited until the victim was heavily intoxicated before exploiting her vulnerability.
The woman, in her intoxicated state, was unable to resist or defend herself as Howdon carried out the assault.
When she regained consciousness during the attack, she was horrified to discover what was happening to her, describing it as a degrading and traumatic experience.
Howdon denied any wrongdoing during the trial, but the evidence against him was compelling enough for a jury to find him guilty of two counts of rape.
The judge presiding over the case, Lord Justice Robert Spragg, expressed his condemnation of Howdon’s conduct during the sentencing hearing.
He explicitly stated, "You were plying her with alcohol that night, I’m satisfied you were trying to get her drunk.
You fully intended to have sex with her that night." The judge emphasized that Howdon’s actions showed a clear intent to sexually assault the woman once she was incapacitated.
The court heard that the victim described herself as being 'passed out drunk,' with a friend noting she was 'nine out of ten drunk.' Despite her inability to consent, Howdon continued his assault while she was in this vulnerable state, with her vomiting and being essentially unconscious.
The seriousness of the case was further underscored by audio recordings presented in court.
A camera outside the window of the room captured an harrowing audio recording, which the judge described as "absolutely harrowing." Additionally, there was evidence of a 999 emergency call made by the woman after she became aware of the assault, during which her voice conveyed palpable terror—a detail the judge remarked upon as 'awful to hear.' The court took into account that Howdon had no previous criminal record and included character references to support his otherwise positive reputation.
Among these was a letter from a rugby club where he was known to be a valued member.
Defense solicitor Gavin Doig highlighted that Howdon's behavior in custody had been exemplary, noting praise from prison officials for his conduct and for assisting another inmate during a medical emergency.
Mr.
Doig argued that Howdon was still young and had acted out of immaturity at the time of the offense.
Ultimately, the judge sentenced Howdon to imprisonment for more than eight years, reflecting the gravity of his actions and the need for justice to be served in this case.
The verdict underscores the serious consequences of sexual assault and the importance of consent, especially when alcohol impairs a victim’s ability to resist or agree to such acts.
