WALSALL SON WITH MENTAL ILLNESS ADMITS MANSLAUGHTER OF MOTHER
Ian Henderson, aged 63, was detained after admitting to manslaughter over the death of his mother, Lillian Henderson, 86, in April 2013.Mrs Henderson died in hospital three weeks after being found with multiple injuries at their Walsall home.
The court heard that Henderson had a mental illness and struggled to care for his elderly mother.
He denied murder but accepted manslaughter.
Judge Philip Parker stated that Henderson was dependent on his mother, and when her health deteriorated, he could not cope, which led to him causing her serious injuries.
Henderson was given an indefinite hospital order at Wolverhampton Crown Court following doctors' assessments.
The case revealed that Mrs Henderson had been her son's carer, but due to Henderson's health issues, roles reversed, and he became overwhelmed.
The incident was raised in Parliament, and police described Henderson as doted upon by his mother his entire life.
The ultimate cause was Henderson's mental illness and frustration, which culminated in the assault that resulted in her tragic death.
