GLOUCESTER MAN IAN GUEST SENTENCED FOR ONLINE PEDOPHILE BEHAVIOR
A man from Gloucester, Ian Guest, aged 45 and residing on Painswick Road in Robinswood, was caught posing as a teenager while seeking sexual fantasies through social media, in an operation conducted by paedophile hunters. The court heard that Guest was handed a community order and was placed on the sex offenders' register.
During a hearing at Gloucester Crown Court on Friday, April 22, prosecutor Neil Treharne explained that Guest’s supposed child victim was actually an adult volunteer working with the Stand Together as One organization, which creates decoy accounts to catch sexual predators.
The decoy profile named 'Olivia' was accessed by Guest between February 6 and 11 of the previous year, and he was initially told she was 14 years old.
Guest claimed he was 16.
Neil Treharne stated, "The first couple of messages were innocent enough, but it soon became clear to the 'girl' that he was not 16, and he was challenged about this.
He admitted he was 42.
When asked why he lied about his age, he said he was just messing about." Subsequently, Guest began to withdraw from conversations until he adopted a new alias, 'John', pretending to be a 14-year-old friend of his, attempting to manipulate the situation further.
The decoy noted he was trying to elicit photographs from the 'girl.' Judge Ian Lawrie QC commented during the proceedings: "This shows a degree of calculation in his actions." As the conversation under the pseudonym 'John' progressed, he asked the decoy for topless photographs, but the decoy organization’s decoy called his bluff, leading the conversation to end.
Following this, the Stand Together as One group contacted Gloucestershire Police, leading to Guest’s arrest on February 26 of the previous year.
Officers seized his phone, which was analyzed and found to contain the exchanged messages with the decoy.
In police interviews, Guest admitted to lying about his age and trying to persuade the decoy to take explicit photos of herself.
The court was informed that Guest attempted to create a similar Facebook account after his initial arrest, which contributed to a decision to impose a sexual harm prevention order.
Defence solicitor Barry White said, "Guest has been honest about his actions and has admitted guilt.
He has no prior convictions.
He is a man with limitations, yet he works full-time in a warehouse, a job he has held for nearly 30 years, and he manages within his difficulties.
He also has no issues with alcohol or drugs." Judge Lawrie QC remarked: "I question his maturity, despite being 45.
His behavior is bizarre, and meeting a girl in real life in this context is unlikely." White added, "This case is atypical.
He denies any sexual intent and is likely to be humiliated publicly, which he believes will prevent recurrence." Guest pleaded guilty to attempting to incite a girl aged between 13 and 15 to engage in sexual activity without penetration, between February 6 and 11, 2021.
Judge Lawrie addressed him: "You are a man with a good character, and I am impressed you have maintained your job for so long.
You have an understanding partner and mother.
However, you entered into a different fantasy world, perhaps due to a lack of appreciation of the real world, displaying immaturity.
I believe you have learned a valuable lesson and will not repeat this behavior." The court sentenced Ian Guest to a 24-month community order, which includes 40 days of rehabilitation activity.
He was also placed on the sex offenders' register for five years and subject to a sexual harm prevention order for the same duration.
Additionally, he was ordered to pay a victim surcharge of 95 pounds.
