MAN HANDED OVER FIVE YEARS IN JAIL FOR SEX OFFENCES
A man registered as a sex offender, Iain Stavert, has been sentenced to five and a half years in prison after violating court orders and attempting to engage in sexual communication with what he believed to be a minor. The incident took place in Cumbria, where police investigations uncovered Stavert's misconduct.
Stavert, aged 60 and residing at Low White Close, Barrow, was brought before Preston Crown Court to face the consequences of his actions.
The case was closely monitored and managed by Detective Constable Ashlynne Elliott, who emphasized the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to oversee individuals subject to such strict legal restrictions.
The charges against Stavert included breaching and attempting to breach a sexual harm prevention order, which is designed to restrict the behavior of individuals with a history of sexual offenses.
Additionally, he was found to have failed in his legal obligation to comply with the notification requirements of the Sex Offenders Register.
Most notably, he attempted to initiate sexual communication with a person he believed to be a child, which is a serious offense.
The police investigation revealed that Stavert engaged in online communication with an individual posing as a law enforcement employee, but in reality, this was an undercover officer.
During these interactions, Stavert expressed intentions to engage sexually, demonstrating a clear breach of the court-imposed restrictions.
Following the hearing, Detective Constable Elliott stated, “We work hard to monitor and manage people who are subject to such orders.
As in this case, we will find out if they breach the terms of these preventative orders and we will do all we can to ensure they are held accountable for their offending.” Stavert’s sentencing took place on Thursday, marking a significant step in the justice system’s efforts to protect vulnerable individuals and uphold the integrity of court orders designed to prevent further harm.
