IAIN COLE SHOCKS LONDON WITH CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE CONVICTION IN NEPAL

In a disturbing case that has garnered international attention, Iain Robert Cole, a British citizen with a history of criminal behavior, was convicted of child sexual abuse charges in Nepal.

The incident unfolded after Cole's arrest on January 19, 2019, in Kathmandu, where authorities uncovered a disturbing pattern of exploitation involving underage children.

According to reports from the Kathmandu District Court, Cole was found guilty of multiple charges related to pedophilia and sexual misconduct with minors.

The court, presided over by Judge Prakash Dhungana, sentenced Cole to three years of imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 30,000.

Additionally, the court ordered Cole to pay Rs 20,000 in compensation to each of the victims involved in the case.

The legal proceedings were based on violations of Article 225 of the Criminal Code, 2017, which explicitly criminalizes acts of pedophilia and sexual abuse of minors.

The law clearly states that engaging in sexual activities with children is a serious offense, with the law also addressing unnatural sexual acts under Article 226.

The case was initiated after allegations of Cole abusing three underage boys in Kathmandu, with the prosecutor demanding a sentence comparable to that for rape, which under Article 226 (3) can range from 18 to 20 years for victims aged between 10 and 14.

Despite the prosecutor's demands, the court's verdict was comparatively lenient, sentencing Cole to three years in prison, a decision that has sparked controversy.

The prosecutor has announced plans to challenge the verdict by filing a writ with the High Court, with officials from the Attorney General’s Office stating they are awaiting the full text of the judgment before proceeding.

In a related operation, the Crime Investigation Bureau (CIB) of Nepal arrested Cole along with an accomplice, Ajay Poddar from India, and a Nepali national.

The arrests took place at around 4:00 am in a rented apartment located in Kalimati, Kathmandu Metropolitan City-13.

Authorities rescued three minors from Cole’s custody during the raid, which was conducted by a team of plainclothes officers.

Investigations revealed that Cole, aged 50, had been involved in a pattern of exploiting vulnerable children by luring them with money and goods.

He had arrived in Kathmandu on December 28, marking his 16th visit to Nepal since 2010.

It was also revealed that Cole had previously been detained in the UK in 2016 for possessing child pornography.

His accomplice, Ajay Poddar, had left Kathmandu for home just last week.

Further inquiries indicated that Cole targeted impoverished children, including street children and those from rural districts such as Dhading.

He would often visit these areas, convincing parents to send their children with him by promising a better future.

Cole’s modus operandi involved renting apartments across the Kathmandu Valley, where he would sexually exploit the children, often after grooming them with expensive clothes, good food, and false promises of a brighter future.

Authorities confirmed that Cole would take children on trips to popular destinations like Pokhara and Nuwakot, further entrenching his manipulative tactics.

His confession and the investigation suggest that his primary motive for traveling to Nepal was to exploit children sexually, with his activities spanning several years and involving multiple minors.

The case has raised serious concerns about child safety and the effectiveness of protective measures in place, prompting calls for stricter enforcement and international cooperation to combat such heinous crimes.
