HUGH HERON FROM GLASGOW SENTENCED TO 15 MONTHS FOR SEXUAL ABUSE OF TWO SCHOOLGIRLS IN MARYHILL AND KNIGHTSWOOD
In a disturbing case that has shocked the Glasgow community, Hugh Heron, aged 55, was sentenced to 15 months in prison after being found guilty of sexually abusing two schoolgirls during the early to mid-1990s.The offences took place in the neighborhoods of Maryhill and Knightswood, with Heron abusing his position of trust to commit these heinous acts.
Heron’s crimes involved inappropriate physical contact with the two young victims, both of whom were minors at the time.
The first girl, whose age ranged from 12 to 18 during the period of abuse, was subjected to repeated sexual assaults over a span of six years.
These assaults included Heron inappropriately touching her breasts while she was in his care, often during the night when she was in bed.
The court heard that these acts were not isolated incidents but part of a pattern of lewd and indecent practices carried out by Heron against her.
The second victim, who was 14 years old at the time, was subjected to a single sexual assault at a residence in Maryhill between January 1993 and June 1995.
This attack involved Heron touching her breasts on one occasion, an act that she described as frightening and traumatic.
She recounted her experience in court, revealing that she was too scared to confide in anyone at the time, which compounded her distress.
Following a detailed trial at Glasgow Sheriff Court, Heron was convicted on four charges.
He was found guilty of two counts of lewd, indecent, and libidinous practices, as well as a charge of indecent assault, all related to his first victim.
The court established that these acts occurred when she was between 12 and 18 years old and involved repeated abuse.
Additionally, Heron was convicted of a similar lewd and indecent act against the second girl, which took place during the period of his care.
During the sentencing hearing, Sheriff Norman Ritchie QC emphasized the severity of Heron’s crimes, stating, “I have taken the view that a custodial sentence is unavoidable here.” The announcement of the sentence was met with a visible reaction from the public gallery, where members shouted “Yes” in approval.
Both women, now aged 38 and 39, bravely appeared in court to recount their ordeals.
The younger victim described her fear at the time, explaining that she was too frightened to tell anyone about what was happening.
The court heard that Heron’s sexual misconduct occurred during the night while the girls were in bed, adding to the sense of betrayal and violation of trust.
