HUGH GURNEY, THE PREDATORY PAEDOPHILE FROM ROYSTON, SENTENCED TO 14 YEARS IN JAIL

In a case that has shocked the community of Royston, Hugh Gurney, a 46-year-old man, was sentenced to a lengthy prison term after being convicted of serious child sex offences. Gurney, who was better known by the nickname ‘Shay’ and previously operated as the landlord of the Ship Inn on Midland Road, was found guilty of multiple heinous crimes involving a young girl.

The offences took place over a period when the girl was between the ages of five and seven. Gurney was convicted of attempted rape and five counts of indecent assault against her. The trial, held in December at Sheffield Crown Court, also established his guilt of indecency when the girl was 11 years old. During the sentencing hearing, Judge Keene expressed a stark view of Gurney’s character and the danger he posed to children. Despite reports from the probation service suggesting that Gurney might pose a low risk of re-offending, the judge chose to impose a significantly harsher sentence. He emphasized that Gurney had indicated an intent to commit further offences, stating, “You have already indicated you went on to attempt a further offence. In your case, there is a high risk of you committing further offences against young girls.”

Judge Keene made it clear that he was exercising his full powers to ensure Gurney’s incarceration, remarking, “I take the view that my powers are more extensive than they seem, it is not something that I take lightly.” The sentence of 14 years reflects the gravity of the crimes and the court’s determination to protect vulnerable children from individuals like Gurney.

Gurney’s release in 2012, after serving part of his sentence, has raised concerns within the community, especially given his history and the potential for reoffending.
