DOCTOR WHO NEARLY KILLED HIS GIRLFRIEND DURING EXORCISM RITUALS STRUCK OFF
Hossam Metwally, a former NHS anaesthetist and self-styled religious zealot, nearly caused the death of his girlfriend while conducting exorcism rituals aimed at expelling alleged evil spirits. At Grimsby's Diana Princess of Wales Hospital, he endangered Kelly Wilson’s life by administering her with painkillers and sedatives while chanting Quranic verses.
This led Ms Wilson, who was a nurse, to fall into a deep coma.
From 2015 to 2019, Metwally believed his partner was possessed and misused his medical position to control her.
During his trial at Sheffield Crown Court, the 61-year-old was condemned as a disgrace to his medical community.
He received a conviction on eight counts, including poisoning with intent to endanger life, and was sentenced in September 2021 to 14 and a half years.
Judge Jeremy Richardson QC described the case as highly unusual and gravely serious, noting he had never overseen a case like this in his over four decades of judging.
He condemned Metwally for abusing his medical training to commit grave offenses, stating that he had betrayed fundamental medical principles.
The Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service panel also decided on May 31 that he must never again practice medicine, following a three-day hearing that resulted in his immediate removal from the medical register to safeguard the public.
The tribunal revealed that Metwally secretly filmed two female patients in undress; he pleaded guilty to voyeurism and showed no remorse.
Despite completing his prison sentence, the medical panel issued an immediate suspension order to stop him from practicing should he be released, as he continued to challenge the verdicts against him.
