MAN SENTENCED TO 10 YEARS FOR 1984 MANCHESTER RAPE AFTER DNA BREAKTHROUGH
A man named Henry Drennan has been sentenced to ten years in prison for raping a woman in Manchester in 1984.
The victim, who was 29 at the time, was asleep when Drennan broke into her home and threatened her with a sharp object before committing the assault.
The crime was linked to Drennan after forensic advances and DNA analysis allowed detectives to match samples from the scene to his DNA, which was stored on the database.
Drennan, now 58 and from Lanarkshire, was arrested at his home last year and pleaded guilty in December, leading to his imprisonment.
The victim still experiences vivid flashbacks and reported feeling extreme fear following the attack.
Additionally, Drennan had moved to Scotland and committed a similar rape in Edinburgh during the same year, for which he was previously jailed.
The investigation was reopened in 2009, but it was only with advances in forensic technology in 2015 that authorities could definitively connect Drennan to both crimes.
The police highlighted the bravery of the victim in supporting the reopened case, despite her trauma.
