HENRY SMITH AND SHOCKING CRIMES IN LEICESTER AND EAST GOSCOTE
Henry Smith, a 39-year-old man with no fixed address, has been sentenced to a lengthy period behind bars following a series of heinous crimes committed in Leicester and the nearby area of East Goscote.Smith’s criminal history includes a reputation for manipulation and control over his victims, with his latest offences exposing a pattern of severe abuse that caused significant suffering for a woman whose life he had tormented for years.
The case came to light after a sequence of events that initially appeared minor but ultimately revealed the true extent of his criminal conduct.
The incident that set off the investigation occurred on Saturday, June 11 last year, when the woman, who was leaving her home in Wigston to meet with her family, returned to find that cash had been stolen from her residence.
This suspicious theft prompted concern within her family, and they suspected Smith to be responsible.
Acting on these suspicions, they called him, which led to his arrest by officers from Leicestershire Police.
During questioning, authorities uncovered a disturbing history of abuse that stretched back to October 2021.
The woman confided in detectives that Smith had become physically violent towards her and had raped her during their relationship, which was set in East Goscote, near Syston.
The investigation revealed that Smith sought total domination over her, exerting control over her daily life by restricting her contact with friends and family members.
Her interactions with loved ones were limited, and he would follow her to ATMs to force her to withdraw money for his personal use.
Throughout the legal proceedings, Smith initially denied all charges, stubbornly refusing to accept responsibility.
However, on the second day of his trial, facing overwhelming evidence, he pleaded guilty to the charges.
Detective Constable Rachael Lee, the officer leading the investigation, described him as someone obsessed with exerting ultimate control.
She stated, "Smith was a man who wanted ultimate control over his victim.
He was manipulative and made her life a living nightmare.
Until the last minute, he tried to deny what he had done, but he pleaded guilty when his victim attended court to give her evidence against him." The victim displayed extraordinary strength and resilience throughout the proceedings, and her testimony played a crucial role in securing justice.
Detective Lee expressed hope that Smith’s imprisonment would bring her some sense of closure and that justice had been served, enabling her to begin rebuilding her life.
In sentencing at Leicester Crown Court on Tuesday, August 15, Smith was handed an 11-year prison term for the crime of rape.
Additionally, he received a consecutive three-year sentence for controlling and coercive behavior.
These sentences combined to total fourteen years and ten months of imprisonment.
Notably, Smith’s criminal record also includes a prior conviction for sexually assaulting another woman, which resulted in a 10-month suspended sentence.
His latest crimes constituted a breach of that previous sentence, leading to the extended prison term.
Furthermore, Smith pleaded guilty to a charge of burglary, for which he received a three-year concurrent sentence.
As part of his lifetime registration requirements, he will be on the sex offender's register for the remainder of his life.
A court-imposed indefinite restraining order now prevents him from contacting the victim or her family, marking a significant step towards ensuring their protection from further harm.
