Henry Day

North Walsham Sexual Abuser

March 2016 Child sex offender jailed for additional three years A 76-year-old man has been sentenced to a further three years in prison after admitting a string of sexual offences against boys dating back decades. Prior to today’s sentencing Henry (known as Harry) Charles Day was already serving a 13 year prison sentence for similar offences against boys. Day was originally convicted in 2009 of 20 sexual offences, including gross indecency and incitement, against eight boys . Today at Norwich Crown Court Judge Bate sentenced Day to a further three years, to run concurrently, in prison following his guilty plea to an additional seven offences of indecent assault against four victims all under the age of 16 at the time. These offences took place between 1969 and 1986 at the Young Citizens Guild at Hemsby – a charity initially launched by Day in the 1950s to help young people grow into confident and community-minded citizens. August 2009 Youth worker sexually abused boys A 70-year-old man awarded an MBE for work with children has been convicted of sexually assaulting teenage boys. Henry Day has been jailed for 13 years at Norwich Crown Court for abusing eight Young Citizens Guild members at summer camps between 1973 and 1995. Day, of North Walsham, Norfolk, was convicted of 18 charges of indecent assault, two of incitement and one of perverting the courseof justice. The abuse was said to have happened at seaside summer camps at Hemsby. The guild was set up by Day in Dagenham, east London, in the 1950s. He was appointed MBE for his voluntary work with children. Sexual predator Judge Simon Barham told Day: “This is the grossest possible breach of trust. “You cynically used this organisation as a means of abusing these boys. “It is likely to cause long term harm to many of them.” Day has been placed on the sex offenders register for life and banned from ever working with children. Witnesses said he showed no sign of emotion in the dock. Debbie Gunnell, senior investigating officer on the case, said Day was a sexual predator who targeted the most vulnerable children. Conrad Shaw, from the Crown prosecution Service, said: “We are delighted with the verdict. Any act of indecent assault is a very serious offence and one that will be rigorously prosecuted. “But this man carried out these wicked acts over a 20-year period by abusing his position which was one of trust, and preyed on these young boys for his own gratification. “We want to thank the victims for coming forward and assisting us with building our case. “This took an enormous amount of courage on their part, and we hope this verdict today will give them a sense of closure, and that they can now move on positively with their lives.”
