HELEN MEDLAND FROM LAUNCESTON IN HORRIFIC HORSE NEGLECT CASE IN CORNWALL
Helen Jane Medland, born on January 20, 1982, and residing on Queen Elizabeth Road in Launceston, has been found guilty of severe neglect involving her three horses. Originally from Bude in Cornwall, Medland’s failure to provide basic care for her animals has led to a conviction that highlights the seriousness of animal welfare violations.Medland admitted to causing unnecessary suffering to her horses, which included a Shetland pony named Sony. The pony had been left to endure a painful condition known as laminitis for several months, a hoof ailment that causes extreme discomfort and can be debilitating if not treated promptly. Despite advice from a horse welfare officer to trim Sony’s hooves to prevent the recurrence of laminitis, Medland ignored these recommendations, allowing the condition to worsen.
RSPCA inspector Claire Ryder described the state of Sony as “awful,” noting that the pony’s hooves were so overgrown that he could barely walk. She further explained that a veterinary surgeon who examined Sony concluded that the pony had suffered unnecessary pain and distress over an extended period due to the untreated laminitis and neglect of hoof care. The inspector emphasized that the suffering was avoidable had proper veterinary attention been given.
Investigations revealed a broader pattern of neglect towards all three horses. The field where the animals were kept was described as “very wet, muddy, and waterlogged,” creating hazardous living conditions. The horses were not provided with adequate food or water; any hay supplied was out of their reach and, due to exposure to the elements, had become moldy and unsuitable for consumption. Furthermore, Medland failed to ensure proper hoof, dental, or general medical care for her animals. The horses were also left vulnerable to lice, with no measures taken to address infestations or improve their health and well-being.
In light of these violations, Medland was sentenced to 18 weeks in prison, though the sentence was suspended for 12 months. She was also ordered to pay a total of £628 in fines and costs. Additionally, she received a lifetime ban from owning or caring for animals, although she retains the right to appeal this ban after 15 years. The case has drawn significant attention to the importance of animal welfare and the responsibilities of pet owners in ensuring proper care and treatment.
