A former police officer from Greater Manchester has been found guilty of two counts of sexual assault, it has been announced.

Ex-police constable Hatel Patel's convictions were disclosed during a misconduct hearing conducted at GMP’s headquarters, led by Chief Constable Stephen Watson.

Patel, who received a suspended jail sentence, resigned from his position in October 2022 while under investigation.

However, Chief Constable Watson stated that he would have been dismissed had he not already resigned.

As a result of his conviction, Patel will be added to the College of Policing’s Barred List, which prohibits him from working in policing roles in the future.

The misconduct hearing’s findings have now been made public.

In his written ruling, Chief Constable Watson confirmed that the allegations of breaches of professional standards had been proven and classified as gross misconduct.

In January this year, Patel appeared before magistrates at Manchester and Salford courts and was convicted of two separate sexual assault charges involving women over the age of 16.

He was sentenced in March to eight months in prison, suspended for two years, and was also ordered to perform 150 hours of community service.

Additionally, Patel was required to pay £1,000 in compensation to each of the victims and was placed under a sex offender notification order for a period of seven years.
