Gwersyllt Child Sexual Abuser
In August 2019, a serious case involving a pensioner from Gwersyllt, near Wrexham, came to light when Harry White, aged 69, admitted to possessing an alarming number of indecent images of children. The court proceedings revealed that White had accumulated nearly 6,000 such images, including 25 classified as Category A, which is considered the most severe form of child exploitation material.
White appeared before Mold Crown Court for sentencing, having previously pleaded guilty to three counts of possessing indecent images and one count of possessing extreme pornographic images involving bestiality. The case was brought to the court’s attention after police executed a warrant at his residence on Old Mold Road, Gwersyllt, at approximately 8 a.m. on August 17, 2018.
During the police raid, White was present at his home with his wife, and he initially denied any knowledge of possessing such illicit material. Officers seized two laptops—one from the living room and another from an outside workshop. Following initial investigations at the scene, White was taken into custody in Wrexham. The detailed examination of the laptops uncovered a disturbing collection of digital content: a total of 5,859 indecent still images, along with seven moving images, and 33 images of extreme pornography involving animals.
The images were classified into different categories based on severity. Among them, 25 still images and one moving image were designated as Category A, indicating the most severe level of abuse. Additionally, 45 still images were classified as Category B, while the remaining 5,789 still images and six moving images fell into Category C, which is considered less severe but still illegal.
Judge Peter Heywood acknowledged that the offences committed by White clearly met the threshold for custodial sentences. However, he expressed a preference for a suspended sentence, emphasizing the importance of allowing White to undergo targeted rehabilitation to prevent future offending. The judge stated that this approach would enable “focused work” to be carried out with the defendant.
As part of the sentencing, White received a 10-month prison term for possession of Category A indecent images. Additionally, he was sentenced to four months for the Category B images, two months for the Category C images, and two months for possessing extreme pornography. All sentences are to run concurrently but are suspended for a period of 24 months. White was also ordered to complete 60 days of a rehabilitation activity.
Furthermore, White will be subject to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order for ten years and must register as a sex offender for the same period. He is also disqualified from working with children and has been ordered to pay court costs amounting to £1,200. The court’s decision reflects the seriousness of the offences and aims to prevent any potential re-offending, while also ensuring that White receives appropriate intervention and supervision.
