JEALOUS BOYFRIEND STRANGLED PARTNER AFTER REPEATEDLY ACCUSING HER OF CHEATING
Harry Chadwick, a 20-year-old known for his jealous and aggressive behavior, strangled his partner after accusing her of infidelity. He repeatedly alleged that she had been unfaithful to him.
At one point, he wrapped his hands around her neck and applied pressure, causing her to pass out.
On another occasion, he forced her onto the sofa and struck her.
Having written a letter to the judge expressing regret for his "disgraceful behaviour," Chadwick has received a two-year prison sentence, suspended for 18 months, at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court.
Their relationship began in June 2025 but was ended by Chadwick a month later, although they later reconciled.
Prosecutor Emily Andrew stated: "He became more aggressive.
He went through her phone and made baseless accusations about her cheating." On August 17, during a walk, the couple passed a man, and Chadwick accused his partner of checking him out because she looked at him for over three seconds.
He then reversed his car toward her and braked suddenly before reaching her.
On August 26, Chadwick accused her again of unfaithfulness.
Enraged, he put his hands on each side of her neck, constricting her so she couldn't breathe, causing her to lose consciousness.
He then told her, "Stop victimising yourself," and pulled her hair.
The following morning, he apologized.
Chadwick continued to suspect her infidelity and, in another incident, pinned her down on the sofa and struck her head.
The neighbor was alerted, and Chadwick pleaded with her not to ruin his life, saying, "I will lose my house, my job, everything.
I am so sorry for all of it.
It is disgusting.
I know that.
I am genuinely sorry for everything.
I love you so much.
Please do not ruin my life.
I am begging you not to do this." In her victim impact statement, she described feeling traumatized by his actions, saying: "I was scared for my life and my family.
I knew if I tried to end the relationship, it wouldn't be the end." Chadwick, from St Lawrence View, Warslow, pleaded guilty to controlling and coercive behavior, intentional strangulation, and assault causing actual bodily harm.
Mitigating counsel Sulzanne McKinstry highlighted that reports indicated this conduct was uncharacteristic for Chadwick.
She explained he has faced trauma, including multiple family bereavements, and has no prior convictions.
She added: "He is young and willing to cooperate with the probation service.
We believe he will not reoffend." Chadwick read a letter to the court admitting his behavior was disgraceful, citing struggles with alcohol, substance addiction, homelessness, job loss, and the death of a close friend.
He expressed remorse, stating: "I was still coping with grief and loss.
I should not have re-entered the relationship.
I became paranoid and obsessive, and the relationship turned toxic.
I drank excessively and behaved disrespectfully.
I want to apologize to her.
I recognize that this conduct is unacceptable and assure you it will never happen again." His sentence includes an accredited program, a 20-day rehabilitation requirement, and a six-month probation monitoring scheme.
He is also subject to a five-year restraining order.
Judge Richard McConaghy stated: "You placed your hands around her neck, pinned her to the bed, and slapped her face.
You accused her of cheating.
You put your hands around her throat and squeezed until she lost consciousness.
You pulled her hair, continued to accuse her of infidelity, and pinned her to the floor to hit her.
She had to bang on the floor to attract a neighbor’s attention for help."
