A 'PREDATOR' JAILED FOR MULTIPLE HISTORIC SEX OFFENCES ON AN UNDERAGE GIRL HAS DIED IN HMP NORTHUMBERLAND
A 'wicked' predator jailed for historic child sex offences has died in prison. The 75-year-old was convicted last year of six counts of indecent assault on an underage girl in the 1980s.
He was also convicted of two counts of inciting the same victim to commit an act of gross indecency.
His victim branded him a "monster with no remorse" as he was jailed at Preston Crown Court, The South Cumbrian Mail previously reported.
She added: "I hope he does not see the light of day again".
The court heard the abuse began while the defendant, of Ripley Avenue in North Shields, was living in Dalton-in-Furness in the North West.
Sodexo, the company which runs HMP Northumberland confirmed his death but said they could not comment further as an investigation is underway.
His cause of death is not yet known.
Wharton had previously served a five-year prison sentence for rape and indecent assault in 1990 against a different victim.
An HMP Northumberland spokesperson said: “Our thoughts remain with all affected by the death of Mr Wharton.
"All deaths in custody are subject to an investigation from the independent Prison and Probation Ombudsman, therefore it would be inappropriate to comment at this stage.”
