MANCHESTER WOMAN JAILED FOR BRUTAL DRUNKEN ASSAULT
A judge condemned the increasing trend of women being brought before the courts for violent offences after excessive alcohol consumption. The case involved Hannah Slate, 21, a single mother from Harphurhey, Manchester, who was sentenced to 12 months in prison after a violent drunken attack.
Judge Martin Rudland described her assault as "vicious" and "premeditated in the moment of the assault," emphasizing there was "no alternative" but to jail her.
The incident occurred after Slate spent the day drinking with friends and later turned up at Steven Heskers' flat on June 10, where she, after being challenged for taking beers, returned at midnight banging loudly on the door and rushing in.
Eyewitnesses reported her screaming "like a psycho" and running at Mr.
Heskers, threatening him with phrases like "come on do you f****** want some?" Slate then pinned him on the sofa before smashing a coffee mug over his head, leaving him with a deep laceration and exposing his skull bone.
The victim was too scared to fight back because she was female and had earlier spent the day drinking five percent lager.
She was found in bloodstained clothes and was arrested.
Slate admitted unlawful wounding and expressed remorse, claiming she didn't remember the attack, which left her feeling wracked with guilt.
Her lawyer attributed her alcohol abuse to a tumultuous upbringing, a violent relationship, and post-natal depression.
During sentencing, Judge Rudland referenced the alarming number of women brought to court for violence due to excess drinking, stating that imprisonment was unavoidable in her case.
