EAST LONDON CHILD SEX OFFENDER FLEES UK WITH HELP FROM SONS
Gualberto Santos, a 58-year-old man previously residing in Poplar, east London, was on trial for child sex offences after he was caught sending sexual messages to someone he believed to be a 12-year-old girl.
He denied the charges and was tried at Snaresbrook Crown Court in October 2023.
Most notably, in November 2022, Santos was arrested for sending sexual messages and attempting to meet a girl he believed to be 12 years old.
As the trial was nearing a guilty verdict, Santos fled the UK on October 31, assisted by his sons Anthony and Jorge, who bought a ticket to France and helped him escape by packing his bag and seeing him off at Victoria Coach Station.
Santos was found guilty in his absence and sentenced to four years in prison, which he will serve if police catch up with him.
Despite the conviction, Santos remains on the run, most likely in Portugal, and authorities are actively seeking him.
