GRANT WEDLAKE SENTENCED IN SOMERSET FOR MULTIPLE SEX OFFENCES AGAINST WOMEN, GIRLS AND BOYS
A man from Somerset has been handed a lengthy prison sentence after being convicted of numerous serious sexual offences involving women, girls, and boys.Grant Wedlake, aged 32 and residing in Felton, North Somerset, was found guilty in February of a total of 12 criminal charges.
Among these charges was the heinous crime of raping a child under the age of 13, a case that has shocked the local community and brought to light the disturbing extent of his offending.
In addition to the rape of a minor, Wedlake was convicted of possessing and distributing indecent images, as well as possessing extreme pornographic material.
The severity and breadth of his crimes led to a substantial sentence, and on Friday, he was sentenced to 21 years in prison at Bristol Crown Court.
The offences attributed to Wedlake date back to 2005, with investigations revealing that his criminal activities spanned over a period of 16 years.
The initial reports to Avon and Somerset Police emerged in 2022, but the crimes themselves had been committed over a lengthy period, involving multiple counts of sexual assault and rape of children under 13.
The case has been a stark reminder of the importance of vigilance and the need to protect vulnerable members of society.
During the court proceedings, a victim read a heartfelt statement describing the emotional toll of Wedlake’s actions.
The individual expressed feelings of guilt and shame, stating that Wedlake’s abuse had derailed their life.
They hoped that one day he would realize the harm he caused and feel remorse, though they admitted that he currently did not seem to understand the impact of his actions.
Another victim conveyed a sense of profound sadness towards Wedlake, emphasizing the destructive path he had chosen.
They addressed him directly, saying, “It is sad that you have chosen this path in life — to hurt, manipulate, and intimidate.
It’s sad, but you now have the opportunity to change.
Use this time to reflect, learn about yourself, and understand the devastating effect your actions have on victims, their families, friends, and the wider community.” They also shared their personal journey towards recovery, describing each day as a step forward in reclaiming their life and happiness.
Their hope was to eventually find peace and begin to enjoy life again, despite the trauma inflicted upon them.
A third victim recounted living in secrecy, burdened by the abuse inflicted by Wedlake.
They revealed that Wedlake’s actions made them feel as though no one would believe them, and that he had not only destroyed their childhood but had a lasting impact on their entire life.
The victim expressed a deep sense of betrayal and stated unequivocally, “I will never forgive Grant for what he did to me.” Detective Ellen Rye from Avon and Somerset Police commented on the case, describing Wedlake as a “dangerous and manipulative man.” She took the opportunity to commend the victims for their bravery in coming forward and sharing their stories.
Rye emphasized the importance of support and reassurance for victims, stating, “I hope they can move forward, rebuild their lives, and focus on healing.” She also urged anyone who has experienced sexual assault or rape, whether recently or in the past, to contact the police.
“We will listen,” she assured, reaffirming the force’s commitment to supporting victims and bringing offenders to justice.
