OFFENDER JAILED AFTER VIOLENT ALCOHOL-FUELLED ATTACK AND CRASH
A man has been sentenced after a series of violent and alcohol-fuelled incidents.Grant John, aged 37, was found guilty of multiple offences including intentional strangulation, assault by beating, criminal damage, drink-driving, and driving without insurance.
The court heard that on April 2, this year, John drank a litre of Absolut vodka in just 20 minutes at his partner's house in Skewen, and then proceeded to attack her.
The incident involved John grabbing his partner by the throat with both hands, forcing her into the living room, pushing her onto a table, and causing her to cry out for help.
He then slapped her across the face and left the house, during which he damaged property including the front door, a wall in the hallway, and his partner's car.
Later that night, John was involved in a crash after he drove a friend's car into a parked vehicle on Burrows Road, claiming he intentionally chose to do so.
The police arrested him, and a breathalyser test showed alcohol levels of 65mg per 100ml of breath, well above the legal limit.
During police interviews, John admitted to his actions.
The court heard he has ten previous convictions for 36 offences, including assault, criminal damage, and driving while disqualified, with his last conviction just last year.
His lawyer described him as 'ashamed' of his behaviour, citing a difficult upbringing and mental health issues linked to alcohol abuse.
Nevertheless, the judge affirmed that custody was inevitable in this case, and John was sentenced to 24 months in prison with a reduction for his guilty pleas.
He will serve up to half the sentence before release on licence, and he faces a three-year driving ban, extended by 45 weeks.
