Chelmsford Rapist
In December 2010, Graham White, a man employed as a driver for transporting children with special needs, was sentenced to nine and a half years in prison after being convicted of multiple serious sexual offences committed over a span of nearly three decades. The offences, which included rape, attempted rape, indecent assault, and numerous counts of indecent assault, targeted young boys and girls, some of whom were under his care while working for a company contracted with Essex County Council's social services.

Graham White, aged 53 and residing on Crocus Way in Chelmsford, had previously pleaded guilty to 17 counts of child sexual abuse. During his trial at Basildon Crown Court, he was also found guilty of three additional charges, bringing the total to 20 counts. The crimes he committed ranged from 1971 to 1999, with the earliest incident dating back to May 1971 and the most recent occurring between 1997 and 1999.

White’s criminal activities came to light after his sister, Alison, who was one of his victims, chose to waive her right to anonymity and publicly speak about her ordeal. In an emotional interview with the Chronicle, Alison expressed her deep disappointment with the length of White’s sentence. She revealed her hope that he would receive a life sentence, stating, “I was hoping he would get life to be honest. It’s life for me. I have got to cope with what he has done for the rest of my life.”

Alison further explained her feelings about justice being served, saying, “I suppose justice has been done but I think he should have got a lot more. He will probably only serve about six years.” She admitted that while the sentence might bring some sense of closure, it would not fully heal her wounds. “This might put closure on the case but it isn’t closure for me. I don’t think I will ever get over it,” she said. She also expressed ongoing fears about her brother’s potential release from prison, worried that he might attempt to find her and that she might not be informed when he is released.

Alison recounted that her abuse by Graham White began when she was just six years old. She described the experience as feeling like “a dream” until she was contacted by another man on the website Friends Reunited, who revealed that White had also abused him. This revelation prompted Alison to report her brother to the police, leading to his arrest two years prior to the sentencing. At the time of her initial report, White was working for Allied Radio Cars in Drood Close, Chelmsford, a company that held a contract with Essex County Council to transport children with special needs to school. Although it remains unclear whether White’s victims were met through his employment, there had been prior complaints about his inappropriate behaviour, including taking children out for unscheduled meals.

Alison, now 42, shared that her abuse by her brother continued even after their family moved to Dixon Avenue in Chelmsford when she was around 13. She revealed that the abuse persisted until she was approximately 16 years old. Due to health issues, Alison was unable to attend the court proceedings but expressed her ongoing concern for her brother’s future. “I wonder what will happen to him in prison. I shouldn’t have those fears but he is my brother at the end of the day. But I am still angry,” she admitted.

In July 2010, it was reported that Graham White was working as a taxi driver, transporting children to schools in Colchester and Chelmsford. This employment was also linked to a contract with Essex County Council’s social services. White, who resided on Crocus Way in Chelmsford, admitted to 20 counts of raping and assaulting young children over nearly 30 years during his court appearance at Basildon Crown Court. He denied an additional five charges, including attempted rape and indecent assault of a boy, which were ordered to lie on file. Two other charges related to the sexual assault of another boy were stayed, and White denies those allegations, which could be pursued further in the future.

The earliest of these incidents dates back to May 1971, with the most recent occurring between 1997 and 1999. Despite multiple arrests over the years, including one in 2007 for attempted rape of a 15-year-old boy, White continued his employment as a taxi driver for some time. He had previously been arrested twice for indecent assault but was never formally charged in those cases. The exact timing of his employment termination remains unclear.

Essex County Council officials clarified that White was never directly employed by the council. The impact of the abuse on Alison Chester, White’s sister, has been profound and long-lasting. She recounted the difficult process of questioning her own children to ensure they had not been victimized by her brother, which thankfully was not the case. However, the trauma she endured has significantly affected her mental health and overall well-being. She revealed that she has been on anti-depressants intermittently for years and described her brother as having been like a father figure after her father’s death. Reflecting on her past, Alison expressed guilt and regret that her parents were never made aware of the abuse she suffered.

Her account underscores the devastating and enduring effects of White’s actions, not only on his victims but also on their families. Despite the lengthy sentence, Alison’s pain and fears continue, illustrating the profound and lasting scars left by such heinous crimes.
