GRAHAM MCGILL CONVICTED OF 1984 MURDER IN GLASGOW AFTER DECADES-LONG COLD CASE REOPENED

In a significant development in cold case criminal justice, Graham McGill, a 59-year-old man from Glasgow, has been found guilty of the murder of Mary McLaughlin, a mother of eleven children, more than 36 years after her tragic death.

The conviction was reached swiftly by a jury that deliberated for just over two hours, underscoring the strength of the evidence presented against him.

Mary McLaughlin's body was discovered on October 2, 1984, six days after she was last seen alive.

On the night of September 26, 1984, she had been out enjoying a night in Glasgow’s West End, engaging in social activities that included drinking and playing dominoes at various local bars.

She was last observed at approximately 10:45 PM, leaving a chip shop on her way home.

However, shortly thereafter, she encountered Graham McGill, who was then 22 years old, and he eventually returned with her to her flat.

At her residence, a brutal attack took place, which the prosecution described as particularly violent.

McGill is accused of strangling Mary McLaughlin using the cord of her own dressing gown, an act that resulted in her death.

The investigation into her murder was extensive, involving dozens of lines of inquiry, but it remained unsolved for decades until modern forensic techniques provided new leads.

Forensic scientist Joanne Cochrane testified that DNA evidence played a crucial role in linking McGill to the crime scene.

DNA samples collected from her dress, the knot of her dressing gown belt, a cigarette end, and a black bra all matched McGill’s genetic profile.

The likelihood of these samples matching anyone else was greater than one in a billion, providing compelling scientific proof of his involvement.

Additional testimony came from McGill’s former wife, Suzanne Russell, who revealed that in 1988, he had confessed to her that he murdered a woman because he “just wanted to know what it felt like.” This confession, coupled with the DNA evidence, painted a clear picture of his guilt.

Prosecutor Alex Prentice QC explained that McGill was on a week’s release from HMP Edinburgh at the time of the murder, serving part of a sentence for two sex attacks.

He was also serving a sentence for assault with intent to rape from 1981.

The court heard that McGill was participating in a 'Training For Freedom' initiative, which allowed him to be out on day release.

It was during this period of parole liberation that he committed the murder of Mary McLaughlin.

McGill’s criminal history is extensive.

He was sentenced to six years in prison in 1981 for assault with intent to ravish and rape.

Later, in 1999, he was convicted of a brutal assault with intent to rape and was subsequently sentenced to life imprisonment.

He was released on licence in 2007 but was re-arrested and charged with Mary McLaughlin’s murder on December 4, 2019.

During the trial at the High Court in Glasgow, the court heard emotional statements from Mary’s family, who expressed their grief and the prolonged pain caused by her loss.

Judge Lord Burns, presiding over the case, indicated that McGill would face a life sentence, which he planned to pronounce in due course.

The judge also expressed gratitude to the jurors for their service in what he described as a distressing and difficult case.

McGill is scheduled to be sentenced at the High Court in Aberdeen next month, where the full weight of justice will be delivered for the murder of Mary McLaughlin, a tragedy that has haunted her family for over three decades.
