GRAHAM CUTHBERT FROM EAST KILBRIDE AND HAMILTON ESCAPES PRISON AFTER CHILD ABUSE IMAGES SCANDAL
In a case that has shocked the local communities of East Kilbride and Hamilton, Graham Cuthbert, a man aged 56, was found in possession of highly disturbing images and videos depicting the sexual abuse of children. The incident came to light in January 2020 when police raided his family home in Strathconon Gardens, Hamilton, during a period when Cuthbert was away on holiday. The police action was based on intelligence received from the national online child abuse prevention organization, which flagged Cuthbert’s digital activities as suspicious.During the raid, officers conducted a thorough and systematic search of the residence, which was occupied by Cuthbert along with his wife and their three children—two sons and a daughter. The police recovered a significant amount of illicit material from Cuthbert’s computer equipment. The material included 85 photographs and five videos that depicted children being sexually abused. Additionally, investigators found 29 images that involved bestiality, further highlighting the severity of the material discovered.
The children shown in the images ranged in age from as young as three years old to approximately 14 years old, with both male and female victims identified. Prosecutor Vish Kathuria outlined that Cuthbert, who was a first-time offender, admitted to possessing these indecent images of children and extreme pornography. The police arrived at the scene in the early hours of September 4, 2018, while Cuthbert was still on holiday, and he was not expected to return until September 7. When officers finally made contact with him, Cuthbert refused to cooperate, giving a 'No comment' interview during questioning.
Defense lawyer Matthew Berlow, representing Cuthbert, stated that his client, who previously resided in East Kilbride before moving to Phillips Wynd in Hamilton, had been assessed by social workers. The assessment concluded that Cuthbert posed a low risk of reoffending. Despite the serious nature of the charges, the court took into account his lack of prior convictions and his current low-risk status.
Hamilton Sheriff Court ultimately decided against imposing a prison sentence. Instead, Sheriff Thomas Millar sentenced Cuthbert to a two-year period of supervision. As part of the conditions of his supervision, Cuthbert was placed on the sex offenders’ register for the same duration. The court also imposed strict restrictions on his internet use and prohibited him from having contact with children under the age of 16 without prior approval from his supervising officer, aiming to prevent any future risk to children and ensure public safety.
