GRAHAM BURNS AND KARLA LEAWORTHY SENTENCED IN CRAWLEY FOR CHILD SEX OFFENCES
In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of Crawley, a local couple has been found guilty and sentenced for their involvement in heinous sexual offences involving young girls. The case, which has garnered significant attention, highlights the disturbing nature of the crimes committed by Graham Burns, aged 55, residing on Otway Close, and Karla Leaworthy, aged 44, of Pegwell Close.
On November 1, both individuals were jointly convicted of engaging in sexual activities in the presence of a young girl, an act that has deeply outraged residents and authorities alike.
The police reports detail how Burns exploited opportunities to assault a vulnerable young girl for his own sexual gratification.
The crimes also involved the disturbing act of carrying out sexual acts in front of a small child, fully aware that the child could see what was happening, adding a layer of depravity to the offences.
Following the conviction, Graham Burns was sentenced on Friday, January 20, to serve a total of seven years in prison.
His sentence reflects the severity of his actions, which also include prior convictions.
On September 5, Burns was convicted of two separate offences: sexual assault on a girl under the age of 16 and inciting that girl to engage in a sexual act.
These convictions underscore a pattern of predatory behavior that has now resulted in a lengthy prison term.
In addition to his prison sentence, Burns will be registered as a sex offender for life.
He was also subjected to an indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO), which imposes strict restrictions on his access to young girls, aiming to prevent any future offences and protect potential victims.
Karla Leaworthy received a different form of sentence.
On December 14, she was handed a two-year community order that includes supervision, reflecting her involvement in the offences.
She will be registered as a sex offender for five years and is subject to a two-year SHPO, which severely restricts her access to young girls and aims to prevent any further criminal activity.
Authorities have emphasized the gravity of these crimes, with police spokespersons stating that Burns and Leaworthy’s actions involved exploiting the vulnerability of young girls for their own sexual gratification.
The case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of vigilance and the ongoing efforts to protect children from sexual exploitation and abuse in the Crawley area and beyond.
