GRAHAM BURGESS SENTENCED IN RENFREWSHIRE FOR ABUSE OF VULNERABLE CHILDREN
A social care worker from Renfrewshire has been sentenced to prison after a series of disturbing crimes involving the exploitation and abuse of vulnerable children under his care.Graham Burgess, aged 58, used his position within the local authority’s child care team to target and manipulate young victims, some of whom were minors in his professional responsibility.
During his tenure as a child care manager at Renfrewshire Council, Burgess was entrusted with the welfare of approximately 20 to 25 children at any given time.
His duties included preparing reports for the Children’s Reporter, coordinating with other agencies involved in the children’s care, supporting the children and their families, and developing tailored care plans to meet individual needs.
His role also involved organizing activities, facilitating contact with family members, and responding to crises as a duty worker, often stepping in during emergencies or when colleagues were unavailable.
However, behind this facade of caregiving, Burgess engaged in a pattern of manipulative and predatory behavior.
In 2015, he was caught drawing explicit images on a whiteboard at a community centre in Paisley while playing pool with a boy he was assigned to support.
The incident left the young boy feeling deeply unsettled.
Following this event, the boy’s parents requested that Burgess be barred from seeing their son, and they informed the child’s school that Burgess was not permitted to visit him.
Further allegations emerged in 2017 when Burgess forcibly entered a teenage girl’s bedroom while she was in the process of changing clothes, despite her clear instructions for him not to enter.
The girl subsequently confided in her grandmother about the incident and expressed her desire to no longer have Burgess as her case worker.
In addition to these incidents, Burgess targeted another teenage girl, grooming her over a period when she was between 15 and 17 years old.
He engaged in manipulative behavior, convincing her to store his personal mobile number under the guise of 'Art and Music Therapy,' and even changed his profile picture to Vincent Van Gogh.
He told her that doing so would prevent her classmates from knowing she had a case worker when attending college.
His communication with her was persistent and invasive, with daily WhatsApp messages, humorous videos, and comments indicating he was trying to build a rapport.
Burgess also gave her gifts, including arts and crafts supplies, a candle, a book, and an iPod.
The situation escalated when he arrived unannounced at her home, where she was alone, and cuddled her.
During this encounter, he made inappropriate comments about his arousal, which left her feeling panicked and physically unwell.
The assault continued when Burgess pulled her into his car on a secluded road, convincing her to get into the back seat, where he sexually assaulted her.
On another occasion, he forcibly made her touch his private parts.
Following a trial, Burgess was convicted of six separate offenses related to his misconduct.
On Tuesday, he was sentenced at Paisley Sheriff Court to serve four years and ten months in prison.
Additionally, he received a three-year and two-month extended sentence, which will require him to be supervised after his release.
Burgess was also placed on the sex offenders’ register, reflecting the severity of his crimes.
In response, a spokesperson for Renfrewshire Council expressed their remorse and commitment to accountability, stating, “We are deeply sorry for the harms caused by this individual and cooperated fully with the police investigation.
The individual is no longer an employee of Renfrewshire Council.” The council emphasized their dedication to safeguarding children and ensuring such abuse cannot occur within their services again.
