Graham Bundy

Dolwyddelan Sexual Abuser

September 2007 Sex offender jailed indefinitely A convicted sex offender who took advantage of a teenage girl with learning difficulties at a party, has been jailed indefinitely. Graham Bundy, 56, was branded a danger to girls and vulnerable young women by a judge at Mold Crown Court. The indeterminate sentence means that Bundy will only be allowed out of prison when the Parole Board consider he is safe. The defendant, from Dolwyddelan, Conwy, admitted two charges of sexual assault. Judge John Rogers QC, said ordinarily Bundy would have received a four year sentence, which would have meant he could have applied for release after two years. But he decided on the indeterminate sentence for public protection and ordered Bundy to register with the police as a sex offender for life. He was also disqualified from ever working with children. The court heard how Bundy had a number of previous convictions relating to sex offences against young girls and while in prison had followed a sex offender treatment programme. Prosecuting barrister Caroline Harries said the latest offence occurred at a party in August when the defendant sat next a 19-year-old woman, who had a mental age of a child aged between 12 and 14, and sexually assaulted her. When he was told to leave the party he initially refused, denied doing anything and tried to punch another guest, the court was told. The assault had left the victim nervous and unable to sleep, and the court heard that her family were angry and upset at what had happened. Judge Rogers told Bundy that his record meant there was “a very significant risk of you causing serious harm”. “Since 1975, you have on six occasions appeared before courts for committing sexual offences involving children,” he said. “High risk” “I am supported in that view by the conclusion of the probation officer who says: “Mr Bundy presents a very high risk of reconviction and poses a very high risk of causing harm, especially to children or vulnerable females”.” Owen Edwards, defending, said that his client had taken specific steps to minimise the risk he posed to children after completing a previous prison sentence in 2000. His work in a country house hotel meant he did not come into contact with children and his wife had, until recently, supported him, Mr Edwards told the court. He also said his daughter had been murdered. “My client is extremely aware that his behaviour over the years has caused a catalogue of misery to a number of families,” said Mr Edwards.
