GORDON INGRAM JAILED FOR ABUSING CHILDREN IN BASINGSTOKE AND SURREY

In April 2021, a man named Gordon Ingram was sentenced to nine years in prison after being convicted of multiple serious offences related to the sexual abuse of children.

The crimes spanned over a period of nine years, during which Ingram systematically groomed and exploited vulnerable children in the areas of Basingstoke and Surrey.

Ingram, who was known to the victims and their families, established a deceptive relationship with the children’s parents, which allowed him frequent access to their homes.

His familiarity with the families extended over nearly a decade, from 1995 to 2004, during which he became a regular visitor.

His involvement went beyond casual visits, as he took the children on holidays and looked after them at his own residence, creating an environment of trust and safety that he later betrayed.

It was through this relationship of trust that Ingram was able to carry out his heinous acts.

He sexually abused five children, actions that he committed for his own sexual gratification.

The court heard that Ingram’s offending involved touching the children’s genital areas, either over or under their clothing, in a manner that was both invasive and deeply damaging.

On the day of sentencing at Winchester Crown Court, Ingram was found guilty of eight counts of indecent assault on a child, a verdict reached unanimously after a trial.

The court also heard that some of these offences took place in Basingstoke, adding to the gravity of his crimes in the local area.

During the proceedings, a victim’s statement was read aloud, revealing the profound psychological impact of Ingram’s abuse.

The victim expressed feelings of worthlessness and despair, stating, “I think about committing suicide pretty much on a daily basis and I feel that I have pretty much zero worth.” They shared that they had contemplated ending their life but decided to see the court case through, motivated by a desire to prevent Ingram from harming others.

The victim also remarked that the guilty verdict marked a significant step towards closure, saying, “The fact that he has been found guilty, kinda feels like a chapter of my life coming to a close.” Another victim described the emotional toll of suppressing memories of the abuse, questioning whether they could have done more to stop Ingram.

They admitted feeling “emotionally stunted” as a result of the trauma inflicted upon them.

In mitigation, defence lawyer Pamela Brain acknowledged the limited scope for mitigation given the nature of the case.

She noted that Ingram, aged 64, was visibly affected by the victim impact statements read after his conviction, emphasizing that the statements had a profound effect on him.

Following his arrest and police interview, Ingram faced significant consequences.

He lost his job and his home, and since then, he has been forced to sleep on friends’ sofas, highlighting the social and personal toll of his actions.

It was also revealed that Ingram had previously pleaded guilty to possessing indecent images of children and attempting to communicate sexually with a minor.

Her Honour Judge Angela Morris, the Recorder of Winchester, delivered the sentence, emphasizing the breach of trust involved in Ingram’s offending.

She stated, “You were more than a mere acquaintance or friendly neighbour helping out with the children on occasions.

You were a very frequent visitor to their parents’ homes; you took the children on holiday and were entrusted with them at your own home on occasions.” Judge Morris described Ingram’s relationship with the children as “quasi-parental,” underscoring the betrayal inherent in his actions.

She condemned the systematic grooming process, which took place over a long period, often within the children’s own homes—places that should have been safe and secure.

The judge concluded that Ingram’s sexual abuse was a calculated breach of trust, carried out over years, and that his actions caused lasting harm to the victims.
