GLYN THOMAS FROM KEMSLEY SENTENCED FOR SEXUAL OFFENSES INVOLVING TEENAGE GIRL IN MAIDSTONE
In July 2011, a man named Glyn Thomas, residing in Ypres Drive, Kemsley, was sentenced to four years in prison after being found guilty of engaging in sexual activities with a teenage girl who was only 14 years old. The case was heard at Maidstone Crown Court, where disturbing details of the abuse were revealed.Prosecutor Nina Ellin outlined that Thomas had repeatedly engaged in sexual intercourse with the young girl, during which he explicitly instructed her not to disclose their encounters to anyone. The court was told that Thomas, aged 43 at the time, referred to the girl as his princess and expressed love for her, further complicating the emotional manipulation involved in the case.
The situation came to light when a neighbor unexpectedly entered Thomas’s flat and discovered him in bed with the underage girl. Confronted by the neighbor, Thomas admitted to the wrongdoing, stating, “I know what I have done is wrong. I don’t know what I was doing.” This incident prompted police involvement and an investigation into the matter.
During the investigation, the girl was hesitant about cooperating with police interviews, frequently changing her mind about whether she would speak to authorities. Meanwhile, Thomas took the girl to London, possibly in an attempt to evade further scrutiny or to continue their illicit relationship. When questioned by officers, Thomas claimed that he believed the girl was 16, a defense that was ultimately rejected by the court.
Thomas pleaded guilty to three counts of engaging in penetrative sexual activity with a girl under the age of 16. His sentencing took place on July 8, where the judge, Jeremy Carey, emphasized the impact of the crimes on the victim. The court also imposed an indefinite sexual offences prevention order, barring Thomas from working with children or vulnerable adults, and mandated that he complete a sex offender treatment program while incarcerated.
Judge Carey remarked on the victim’s vulnerability, stating, “The victim has been substantially affected by these offences; she is a vulnerable young girl with her own problems and difficulties. Although you are attempting to present that you are remorseful, I am doubtful of this.”
Detective Constable John Milham, who led the investigation, expressed his views on the case, saying, “Glyn Thomas deliberately set out to groom this very vulnerable child for the sole purpose of sexually abusing her. I would like to pay tribute to the child victim in this case who was able to find the courage to provide police with sufficient evidence to convict him.”
