GURKHA WIFE MURDERER GLENN NELSON GETS LIFE SENTENCE
Glenn Nelson, aged 30, attacked and killed mother-of-three Krishnamaya Mabo after laying in wait for her and dragging her into a nearby field close to her residence at the barracks, where she lived with her husband, who is an active soldier.During the proceedings at Reading Crown Court, it was revealed that Nelson, who resided in a caravan, had earlier attempted to approach two women on the same evening before he targeted Mrs Mabo.
His assault involved an attempted rape, which she resisted fiercely, leading him to strangle her with a piece of her own clothing and then leave her body in an airfield at Aborfield in Berkshire.
In 2001, Nelson received an eight-year prison sentence after being convicted of two counts of attempted rape.
He also previously had convictions for indecent assault and causing actual bodily harm.
Appearing via videolink, Nelson admitted to the charges of murder and attempted rape and was sentenced to life imprisonment, with a minimum term of 25 years before eligible for parole.
Mrs Mabo, 39, who emigrated from Nepal to Britain in 2000 with her husband, a soldier in The Royal Gurkha Rifles, was described as a kind, caring, and charming person.
Her husband, initially posted in Folkestone, Kent, and later transferred to Aborfield five years prior, recounted how she was collecting nettles to make herbal tea when Nelson attacked her.
In a heartfelt tribute after her death, he said: “Her passing has profoundly affected our family.
My life and my children’s lives have changed, and we must learn to live without her.
She was the best person I knew, full of kindness and charm towards her loved ones.
We had planned to celebrate our 20th wedding anniversary later this year, and I was going to buy her a special gift for her upcoming 40th birthday.” Court proceedings also revealed Nelson's intentions to find a woman to assault, as he approached lone females twice, but was distracted both times.
Later, he returned to his caravan, changed clothes, armed himself with a knife, and went out again looking for a victim.
The judge, Mr Justice Singh, was informed that Mrs Mabo fought bravely and even managed to disarm Nelson temporarily, but he ultimately overpowered her and strangled her with a piece of her clothing.
Mr Justice Singh remarked, “I am confident you are a highly dangerous individual, as evidenced by your multiple violent offenses against women.”
