Lowestoft Rapist
In a significant case that has sent shockwaves through the community of Lowestoft and the wider Suffolk area, Glen Martin has been sentenced to a lengthy prison term of 18 years after being found guilty of a series of heinous historic child sex offences. The conviction follows a detailed trial at Ipswich Crown Court, which lasted just over a week, during which the jury deliberated on the evidence presented against him.

Glen Martin, aged 53, residing on Aldwyck Way in Lowestoft, faced multiple charges related to the abuse of young children. The court heard that he was responsible for three separate counts of rape, three counts of buggery, two counts of indecent assault, and two counts of gross indecency with a child. Despite his vehement denial of all 12 charges, the jury found him guilty on the majority of counts, leading to his conviction. He was, however, acquitted of one indecent assault and a third count of gross indecency with a child.

The offences attributed to Martin spanned a considerable period, with some of the crimes dating back nearly three decades. During that time, he was living in North London and Cheshunt, which indicates that his offending was not confined solely to Suffolk but extended across different regions. The court also heard that some of the assaults involved two different boys, with Martin accused of seven attacks on one and five on the other.

The case was initially brought before North East Suffolk Magistrates Court in Lowestoft on March 4 of the same year, where Martin made his first appearance. Following this, the case was transferred to Ipswich Crown Court for a full trial. The lengthy investigation and subsequent trial highlighted the courage of the victims, who came forward after many years to report the abuse. Their bravery was commended by Suffolk Constabulary, which expressed its support and commitment to ongoing victim assistance.

Detective Constable Lisa Hogan-Green, from the Suffolk Constabulary’s dedicated rape investigation unit, issued a statement praising the victims and emphasizing the importance of justice. She said, “We are delighted on behalf of the victims that Glen Martin has been sentenced at court to an 18-year prison term. The crimes he committed against his young victims were abhorrent. His victims were incredibly brave to come forward a number of years later to report the offences to us and to relive the trauma of what they were subjected to, and we will ensure that the victims receive ongoing support.”

Hogan-Green also reaffirmed the police force’s dedication to investigating both current and historic sexual offences, hoping that the sentencing will encourage other victims to come forward without fear. She added, “Hopefully the sentencing of Martin will go some way to reassure and give confidence to victims of such offences to come forward to us, safe in the knowledge that we will fully and thoroughly investigate these types of crimes to ensure those responsible are brought to justice.”

Glen Martin’s case underscores the importance of persistent investigation and the courage of victims in seeking justice, even after many years. His sentencing marks a significant step in addressing historic child abuse cases within Suffolk and demonstrates the police’s unwavering commitment to protecting vulnerable individuals and holding offenders accountable.
