Torquay Rapist
In a case that has shocked the community of Torquay, Glen Aris, a 56-year-old resident of Willow Avenue, has been sentenced to a decade behind bars for his involvement in the sexual grooming and abuse of a young girl under the age of 13. The incident, which spanned several months, involved a disturbing pattern of manipulation and exploitation that has left a lasting impact on the victim.

According to court records, Aris engaged in a series of criminal acts including causing or inciting a child under 13 to participate in sexual activities, sexual assault, rape, and assault by penetration. The prosecution, led by Thomas Bradnock, detailed how the abuse was not a one-time event but a prolonged ordeal during which Aris used gestures of kindness—such as offering pizza and ice cream—to gain the girl’s trust and lower her defenses. These acts of grooming were designed to make her feel special, but ultimately served to facilitate his criminal intentions.

During the proceedings at Exeter Crown Court, the judge, Simon Carr, acknowledged the bravery of the victim, who has since come forward as an adult to recount her experiences. Her willingness to speak out was praised by the court, especially given the sensitive nature of the case. Aris, who pleaded guilty to multiple charges, admitted to the court that he had committed these acts but claimed that he never physically forced the girl to engage in sexual activity.

Judge Carr emphasized the severity of the case, describing it as involving “extensive grooming” that was both calculated and disturbing. He expressed his concern that Aris believed a child could give valid consent to sexual acts, a misconception that underscores the gravity of the crime. The judge remarked on the profound and lasting damage inflicted upon the victim, stating, “The effects on her will have been devastating. It is perfectly clear to me the effects are very real and I expect will be with her for the rest of her life.”

Despite the heinous nature of the crimes, Judge Carr acknowledged Aris’s admission of guilt, which he said spared the victim the trauma of giving evidence in court. He noted that this act of honesty also helped to dispel any lingering doubts about the abuse, allowing the victim to begin the process of moving forward. The judge concluded by commending her for her courage and expressed hope that the sentence would serve as a measure of justice and a step toward healing for her.
